Food for Detroiters, grown by Detroiters 🍅⁣ ⁣ Detroit’s best kept secret is their EXPANSIVE network urban farms and community gardens, and @keepgrowingdetroit is one to remember. Having just moved to Michigan last year, @fiskarsamericas and I agreed that KGD would be an amazing recipient for Project Orange Thumb, and in addition to a wide selection of Fiskars tools, they also received a $50,000 donation! Here’s what makes KGD so awesome:⁣ ⁣ With a combination of hoop houses, raised beds and in ground rows, they produce over 8000 pounds of food! Their tomatoes were incredible, and they even had beds of turmeric and ginger 😮⁣ ⁣ Through their Garden Resource Program, KGD empowers more than 2,900 urban gardens throughout Detroit with seedlings, education and garden assistance. Helping others learn to grow their own is what food sovereignty is all about 🥦⁣ ⁣ It’s not just about the food though. KGD is a big proponent of native plants and their native garden was beautiful. They’re even having a native plant sale on October 4th 🌱⁣ ⁣ Our volunteer day was one to remember and we celebrated with a home grown pizza party at the end of the day. Sharing a meal is always the best way to connect with the other volunteers and community members 🍕⁣ ⁣ If you’re in SE Michigan, Keep Growing Detroit is absolutely worth a visit, and Fiskars and I were so grateful to support they work this year 🙏⁣ #detroit #urbangarden #urbanfarming #urbanfarm

It’s heartbreaking to witness all the destruction happening across the country, the world….the destruction of the shredded remains of our true nature. All I can think is we must do what we can - hold our own little patches sovereign and restore the native plant communities. We have to step out of this entitled insanity where we colonise our own patches of this earth body. Our gardens. With non native plants for our own pleasure. . This is the most productive fruit tree I’ve grown in my small yard 🫐 Okay technically blueberries aren’t quite big enough to be “trees” but that’s what makes them so great! They grow great in containers, don’t need special pruning, produce fruit when young, look pretty, and can handle extreme cold. I really can’t think of any other fruit tree that is quite this easy. I leave my blueberry bush outside on my patio all year long. It turns a gorgeous red/orange before it loses its leaves in the winter. Then in April the plant is loaded with flowers that eventually become blueberries. I got this plant 2 years ago and it fruited the first year I brought it home. It’s also a native plant so you’ll make wildlife happy too. WORD OF CAUTION ⚠️ With that said, you’ll want to protect the berries from birds when they’re close to getting ripe. Also, Don’t settle for tiny seedlings from sketchy websites online with these. You’re much better off finding a local nursery that carries these plants in stock. And you might get a good discount on them at the end of the season.
