Like I was doing something wrong just by looking good. Like the way I showed up was too much. Too polished. Too bright. 😬
I expected her to say something about comparison. Something predictable.
💬 But instead she said five words that rewired my brain:
“You’re stepping out of equality.” 🧠
👀 “When you look elevated, you break the unspoken agreement to be like everyone else. What you feel isn’t shame. It’s the fear of triggering someone else’s envy or discomfort. You’re unconsciously taking responsibility for other people’s feelings.”
That hit me like a freight train. 💥
I wasn’t ashamed of myself. I was ashamed of the possibility that someone near me might feel less than.
Then she said one sentence I’ve carried ever since:
💭 “When you dress simpler than you want to, you don’t become closer to people. You only move further away from yourself.” 🪞
That discomfort? It was an old habit. The habit of being convenient. Not standing out. Not making anyone uncomfortable.
