CHBoom! There goes $60K. Top fuel dragsters produce 8,500-10,000 horsepower- that’s over 1,000 horsepower per cylinder. They burn nitromethane fuel, which allows the engine to burn over seven times the fuel mixture of pump gasoline. Fuel is forced into the engine with a Roots supercharger, or “blower”, which was originally designed to ventilate mineshafts for humans to breathe. Humans first adapted the Roots to compress diesel for big trucks, then found them effective in moving large quantities of nitro- with 55-65 pounds of boost. Extremely rich mixtures of nitromethane are necessary, & not-fully-ignited fuel will exit the exhaust pipes and combust, producing the characteristic exhaust flame. In a typical warm-up, burnout, staging, & 1/4-mile run, a top fuel car burns through around 20 gallons of nitromethane. Current speed record is around 338 mph. Sometimes things go wrong.
