Joe Neguse pressed DHS Secretary Kristi Noem about the company that received the massive taxpayer-funded deal, pointing out that the firm appeared to have no clear headquarters, no website, and was incorporated just days before the contract was awarded.
When Neguse asked where the company was headquartered, Noem responded that she did not know. Neguse then noted that investigators also couldn’t find a headquarters and that the address associated with the company appeared to be tied to a political operative. Lawmakers say the company that received the $143 million contract was formed only eight days before the deal went out, raising questions about how such a new entity secured one of the largest advertising contracts in DHS history.
Concerns grew even further when lawmakers pointed out that one of the subcontractors connected to the contract is tied to a political firm that worked with Noem during her time as governor of South Dakota. Critics argue that the connections create the appearance of potential conflicts of interest and warrant deeper investigation into whether the contracting process followed federal rules.
Several senators have already called for the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General to investigate the deal as part of a review of the agency’s $220 million immigration advertising campaign.
