KI🚨NYC PARENT PSA: Times Square “character photos” can turn into a shake-down.
Here’s how the scam usually goes:
• Someone in a costume (Elmo/Spider-Man/etc.) pulls your kid in or steps into your photo.
• You take a quick pic thinking it’s a fun NYC moment.
• Then they block your way, demand cash, and pressure you hard (“tip now,” “how much you got?”).
• If you hesitate, it can get loud, intimidating, and messy fast—especially with kids.
How to avoid it (without drama):
✅ Don’t engage — keep walking, don’t make eye contact.
✅ If your kid wants a photo: say “No thank you” while moving.
✅ Never hand over your phone to them.
✅ If they step into your pic: put your phone down and walk away.
✅ If they follow you or won’t back off: head into a store / hotel lobby and call for help.
✅ Tell kids before you arrive: “We don’t take pictures with characters in Times Square.”
This isn’t “NYC being NYC.” It’s predatory—because they target families who don’t want a scene.

3. Walking 4 people across like a wall 😅
Single file is your best friend during rush hour.
4. Not knowing where you’re going… but still walking slow 📍
It’s okay to be lost — just don’t be lost and in the way.
5. Standing on the left side of the escalator 🛗
Left = walk, Right = stand. Always.
Follow these… and you’ll blend in like a local in no time. 😉

BRLeave it to our 8-year-old to get us to visit the top of the @empirestatebldg for the first time. I was convinced I'd been up before but quickly realized I hadn't. It's crazy the things we take for granted when they're right in our backyard. Here are a few tips and suggestions on where to eat nearby:
+ Get tickets in advance if you can. However, I've heard of many winging it right before they visited with zero problems.
+ Opt to go on a weekday rather than a weekend. If you could make a Monday or Tuesday morning happen, I've been told that's ideal.
+ Sunset has the best views and photo ops (so I've heard from my research), but it tends to be more crowded. Mornings are known to be the least crowded.
+ We visited both observation decks: the 86th floor and the 102nd floor. If you want to go to the 102nd floor, make sure you get the ticket that includes that.
+ Tickets are stupid expensive, but if you happen to know someone who works in the building, they get a discount. I believe it's half the price.
+ Overall, it was breathtaking and a must-do once in your life. The kids absolutely loved it.
+ For dining: I'd avoid eating inside the building and choose something nearby. If you're into steakhouses, the NYC famous Keen's steakhouse is a few blocks away. The building is also a block away from KTown where you can find so many great eats like Turntable Jazz Chicken & Jongro for Korean BBQ. With kids La Pécora Bianca is a few blocks away and always a crowd pleaser. We went to Pinkberry for nostalgia sake, but there are other great dessert spots in KTown.
