NEGrow your own Oak Tree 🌳 from a tiny Acorn
Imagine planting something in your garden today that could stand for hundreds of years, feed generations of wildlife, and shape an entire landscape. That’s the power of planting an oak tree from a single acorn. 🌳😊
This year is a mast year, when oaks and other trees produce a bumper crop. This is thought to ensure they have the opportunity to reproduce, as they produce more than can be eaten by wildlife. It doesn’t happen every year, but when it does, it’s nature’s invitation to gather, plant, and give these seeds a chance to grow. 🌱
All you need to do is collect fresh acorns, pop them in water, if they sink they are healthy and ready to go, then just plant them pointy side down in a pot of soil with good drainage, and leave outside to let winter’s chill trigger their germination. 🪴😊👍
Once shoots appear, move the seedling into a larger pot, leave them to establish a good root system and then find a spot for it to grow to maturity. 🌳

NCUnlobed but not unloved: NCBG research botanist Scott Ward explores a few of the common oak species in our area whose leaves lack lobes – a.k.a. the laurel or live oak group. Featuring:
• Blackjack oak (Quercus marilandica)
• Water oak (Quercus nigra)
• Willow oak (Quercus phellos)
Scott is part of our Herbarium team, which produces the Flora of the Southeastern U.S. – the definitive taxonomic guide to the plants of our region. The Flora divides oaks into four groups based on leaf shape rather than phylogenetic relationships for ease of identification: unlobed (laurel oak group), even crenations/teeth (chestnut oak group), lobes without bristle tips (white oak group), and lobes *with* bristle tips (red oak group).

BRI’ve been deep cleaning the studio, and doing lots of admin, planning my year ahead and crossing my little fingies that I don’t have to pivot like 20x before march break. This ornate oak leaf vase is one of my favourite things to have come out of 2025. I am all about colour and sometimes it feels really good to rein it in a little in one area so I can go nuts in another way. I’d say it’s all about balance, but really it’s just because this underglaze is so smooooth.
