OceanXplorer is a state-of-the-art research vessel that is able to explore parts of the ocean often previously unknown to man. It takes a lot to make this exploration happen, but there's one piece of equipment that really makes our entire operation possible: the CTD. #marinescience #oceanography #exploration #funfacts #oceanx

Four powerful ocean waves meeting at one single point 🌊❌🌊 is a rare and mesmerizing natural phenomenon. It happens because of wave refraction, when underwater ridges and slopes bend incoming waves and focus their energy into one precise location 🧭🌍. Instead of spreading out, the wave energy concentrates, making the collision look perfectly timed and unusually intense. These convergence zones can form suddenly and are still being studied, as they can be dangerous for swimmers, boats, and surfers — even when the sea looks calm ⚠️🚤🏄‍♂️. It’s a stunning reminder that hidden seafloor landscapes can dramatically shape what we see on the ocean’s surface 👀🌊. Via: @chris.whitey We do not own any of the content. What do these swirling ocean currents have to do with Earth’s climate? 🌀🌊 These rings are part of the Agulhas Current, which carries water down the east coast of Africa. Sometimes, the current pinches off giant eddies, called Agulhas Rings, that carry salt and heat to the west, into the Atlantic Ocean. Sometimes, these swirling eddies can persist for years! Agulhas Rings are an important part of the Global Ocean Conveyor Belt, a system of currents that plays a big role in the climates of North America, Europe, and Africa. Without these currents, winters in Europe would be much colder, and droughts in Africa more severe. #Earth #NASA #Ocean #AgulhasCurrent #AgulhasRings #Science #Oceanography #Sea #DataVisualisation

Octopuses are colorblind, yet they’re some of the most skilled camouflage artists in the animal kingdom. 🐙 Their skin is packed with chromatophores, pigment cells that let them change color and texture in an instant to match their environment. How do they do it without seeing color? That’s a puzzle scientists are still trying to solve. #Octopuses #MarineBiology #Oceanography #SeaLife #Science This project is part of @ifthenshecan, an initiative of Lyda Hill Philanthropies.

Solomon Weston, a marine biology student, is spending the summer break from his studies supporting a record-breaking endurance challenge around the coast of Iceland. Solomon recently completed the second year of a Marine Biology and Oceanography degree, and will return for his final year in September. Before that, he is putting some of the skills learned during his course into practice by spending almost three months supporting endurance athlete @rossedgley’s attempt to become the first person to swim around the Icelandic coastline. “I have long been aware of Ross Edgley and his immense endurance challenges, but I had also grown up sailing so taking part in this expedition was hugely appealing to me. I was also in search of placement work and knew this was an incredibly unique opportunity that would help me stand out.“ 📹 Videos by @solomon_weston_ #universityofplymouth #plymouth #marinebiology #oceanography #plymuni #rossedgley #iceland #icelandiccoast #greaticelandicswim #studentlife #university

Meet the lion’s mane jellyfish, the true spaghetti monster. This isn’t just any jellyfish — it’s the longest animal in the ocean. One was recorded with tentacles over 36 metres long. That’s longer than a blue whale! Its name comes from the the appearance with long, flowing tentacles that resemble a lion’s mane. #jellyfish #ocean #marineanimals #ningaloo #underwaterphotography #underwaterphotography #divephoto #underwaterpicture #divetravel #marineanimals #oceanography #australia #coralreef #jellyfish #ocean #earthofficial #earthfocus #earthpix #jellyfishes #deepocean #beautifulmatters #divingphoto #divingphotography  #underwaterphotography #marinebiology #marinelife #ocean #ausgeo #divinglife #underwaterlife #underwaterworld

What's your marine identity? 💙 New research suggests that people’s deep connection with the ocean – their “marine identity” – can help us reset society’s relationship with the seas. Led by Dr. Pamela Buchan from @exetermarine with a diverse, international group of marine researchers and practitioners, this research defines marine identity as: “An identity rooted in how the ocean as a place supports the sense of self.” This is the first time that an international, cross-cultural definition of marine identity has been agreed upon. This research is the culmination of a project that was endorsed as an #OceanDecade Activity and by the @missionoceaneu, and is a key contribution to Decade Challenge 10, which aims to restore society's relationship with the ocean. To read the paper, search "A transdisciplinary co-conceptualisation of marine identity" online. #OceanScience #OceanLiteracy #Oceanography #SDG14 #ProtectOurOceans @uniofexeter
