GLRadiohead’s No Surprises video has a chillingly simple concept: Thom Yorke trying not to drown for over three minutes. Director Grant Gee was inspired by a helmeted shot from 2001: A Space Odyssey and childhood memories of underwater escape acts. Fixated on the lyric “a job that slowly k*lls you,” Gee created a scene where water slowly fills Yorke’s helmet. A special effects team built a Perspex helmet with a release valve in case things went wrong. To minimize breath-holding time, the crew sped up the song and filming, later syncing it in post-production. Though Yorke could hold his breath for a minute in normal conditions, the pressure made it far harder. Gee called the shoot “a horror show… repeated torture.” After many failed takes and coaching, Yorke managed the full breath-hold, resulting in one of Radiohead’s most haunting visuals.
