Her name means “precious jewel” and “rare beauty” in Swahili, a nod to her species’ native habitats in central Africa and especially fitting for this special little one. Goed nieuws met een streepje voor: er is een okapi geboren! 🥰 Eerst wat wiebelen en dan rechtstaan op die typische gestreepte pootjes. Okapi Zaïre werd mama van haar derde jong: een bijzonder moment voor een soort waarvan er wereldwijd nog maar zo’n 10.000 in de natuur leven. ZOO Antwerpen zet zich, via haar conservatiestichting Antwerp Zoo Foundation, al meer dan 30 jaar in voor de bescherming van de okapi’s in de regenwouden van Congo. En net daarom is elk jong dat hier geboren wordt extra bijzonder. 🌍❤️ Het kleintje blijft voorlopig nog dicht bij mama, maar alles gaat zoals het hoort en het komt mooi bij. De verzorgers hebben aan de strepen die onder de staart doorlopen kunnen zien dat het een mannetje is, want bij vrouwtjes is dat niet zo. Binnenkort kunnen jullie stemmen voor de naam van de kleine okapi, die net als alle jongen die in 2026 geboren worden, met een B zal beginnen. Hou dus zeker onze kanalen in de gaten! 🤩 #ZOOantwerpen #okapi #geboorte
