By definition, the horse that carries itself “on the bit” is adjusting to the additional weight of the rider by caudally shifting its nose, shortening and arching its neck to some extent, bringing its hocks underneath it, and thereby shifting its centre of gravity caudally (FEI, 2007) with minimal contact or pressure from the reins.
It is worth considering how the concept of being “on the bit” may have been corrupted by common equestrian parlance. It is a poor translation from the French mise en main which literally means, put in the hand, and refers to the relaxation of the jaw and of the poll (Decarpentry, 1949) so that the horse “releases the mouth softly and loyally accompanies the hand wherever it moves” (Karl, 2008).
The poll should always be the highest point of the neck, and the horse should be trained for this self-maintained posture by achieving what is known as self-carriage (FEI, 2009). This self-maintained posture is intended to optimize the balance of the ridden horse and its readiness to respond to the signals transmitted by the rider.

ZE"Topline". An obsession for so many people. And one of my least favourite terms. Why? Well, it gives most people the impression that we're talking about the development of muscles along the horse's back which, conceptually, should give him the nice "round" shape that well schooled horses tend to have... except that it's really about that shape coming from the activation of the underside of the horse, i.e. the abdominals. Sure, back muscles can develop, but for the most part, it's about the lifting of the spine from underneath, & shifting the weight onto the hocks to lift the front end. My problem with people thinking "top" is that they try to make the back round by pulling the horse's head down (which makes the neck round), which can lead to all sorts of issues. A little while ago I took the risk of embarrassing myself at a @heartfelt_horsemanship clinic to illustrate my point. I'll repeat this in a video at some stage but in the meantime... try this: Get down on all fours. Dip your tummy to the floor & simultaneously tuck your chin to your chest. Did the chin tuck lift your spine? Didn't think so. Now, round your back to the sky & lift your head too. Did your head position impact the rounding of your spine? It was probably a bit uncomfortable, right? But doing a chin dip definitely didn't lift your back. I'll bet you had to lift your back with your abs... right? Horses do too. But they can only do that if we develop their abs. Can't make em do a sit up, so what do we do? Still on all fours, lift your right knee towards your right elbow. Feel that? Abs. On all fours again, lift both of your hands off the floor. Abs again, with some glute and hamstring. Knees to elbows for horses is working over poles or doing hillwork. Raising the front end is roll overs, roll backs, turns on the HQ or turns into a fence, which force the weight back over the hocks & the abs to engage. These exercises might not look "pretty" to start with, but they'll help build the right muscles so that your horse will not only look beautiful in the long run, but will feel good too.

AVBuilding on the Reel we posted the other day, this is the first part of Avery’s lesson where she learned to how to “leg Maple into her hands,” so that Maple collected and shortened her stride but didn’t break into a lower gait. This was a challenge for both Avery and Maple, and there were times when they were both frustrated. Eventually, though, Maple stretched down onto the bit and was very relaxed and responsive, which led to her being relaxed and responsive when they started jumping. One of Avery’s new goals is to practice collecting, extending, and getting Maple to stretch down onto the bit to start every ride to get her in a good headspace, especially if they have a lesson and will be jumping.
