Have you ever seen human eggs? They are the largest cells in the body. You don’t need a microscope to see them! During an egg collection procedure (also known as oocyte retrieval, or oocyte pick-up, OPU, or egg pick-up, EPU), an embryologists’ job is to search and locate these eggs. They are often surrounded by a cloud of shiny cumulus cells, which makes them easy to spot. These are four beautiful healthy looking eggs. However, we can’t assess the maturity of these eggs until we strip the cumulus cells off. When the ovary isn’t happy… Never seen this before but thought I’d share. Egg retrievals can have all sorts of surprises in store. It’s important you have someone skilled to do them. Sometimes you’re a millimeter away from important structures like blood vessels or bowel. Other times you can’t reach the ovaries vaginally so you need to do an abdominal retrieval. And yet other times, it requires super sure hands so that you can flush the follicle out. And that’s all with a happy ovary. This one tried to telll me I shouldn’t mess with it. But I did anyways! Does you RE know how to manage transabdominal retrievals or transvaginal ultrasound guided embryo transfers? Un grupo de investigadores del Reino Unido acaba de publicar en The New England Journal of Medicine (julio 2025) los primeros resultados clínicos detallados de bebés nacidos gracias a la transferencia pronuclear (PNT), una técnica de donación mitocondrial. 👩‍🔬 ¿Cómo funciona? Se fecundan dos óvulos: 1️⃣ Uno de la madre (con mutaciones en el ADN mitocondrial) 2️⃣ Otro de una donante con mitocondrias sanas 🧪 Luego se extraen los pronúcleos (el material genético nuclear de los padres) del embrión de la madre y se trasladan al óvulo fecundado de la donante, previamente enucleado. Así se forma un embrión con el ADN de los padres, pero con mitocondrias sanas. 🌱 👶 En este estudio ya han nacido 8 bebés sanos, todos con niveles muy bajos o indetectables de mutaciones mitocondriales y un desarrollo neurológico normal. 📌 ¿Y esto no lo habían anunciado ya en 2023? Sí, pero en 2023 solo se había confirmado públicamente que habían nacido los primeros bebés con esta técnica. No se habían publicado datos clínicos ni detalles científicos. 👉 En cambio, este estudio de 2025 es el primero en reportar resultados clínicos, seguimiento a largo plazo y niveles de heteroplasmia, con evaluación médica completa. 📚 Referencia: McFarland R, et al.
