In this motion, the spring’s elasticity provides a restoring force that acts toward the central equilibrium line. As the spring is displaced to one side, elastic potential energy is stored in its deformed structure. Upon release, this potential energy is converted into kinetic energy as the spring accelerates toward equilibrium. When the spring passes through the central position, its velocity is at a maximum, and the stored energy is almost entirely kinetic. As it moves past equilibrium to the opposite extreme, kinetic energy is again converted into potential energy, and the cycle repeats. The frequency and period of this transverse oscillation depend on the spring’s stiffness, the mass attached (if any), and its length. Unlike longitudinal oscillations, the force and motion are perpendicular, which means tension within the spring resists bending rather than stretching. In extended systems like slinkies or coiled springs, this can propagate transverse waves, where each coil moves slightly out of phase with the next, demonstrating wave phenomena such as amplitude, wavelength, and interference. Rapid shaking of the base excites the middle mass in to large amplitude motion while the other two remain relatively motionless. Moving the base slowly excites the large mass, and shaking such that the rate is between these two frequencies excites the mass on the longer leaf spring. A demonstration of frequency response- how periodic forces of small amplitude can produce large amplitude oscillations by matching the natural frequency of the system. However, it's possible to process any other kind of wave or oscillation electronically, scaling it to audible frequencies and then converting it into a sound wave. It is called Sonification. Even though no sound can travel in space, sonifications provide a new way of experiencing and conceptualizing data. It allows the audience, including blind and visually impaired communities, to “listen” to astronomical images and explore their data. Hubble image of the Helix Nebula converted to sound. Colour is mapped to pitch (red=low, blue=high) and brightness controls volume. Red indicates the presence of hydrogen and nitrogen and blue indicates oxygen. The Helix Nebula, or Eye of Sauron, is 655 light years away and 3 light years across. In this new sonification of Perseus, the sound waves astronomers previously identified were extracted and made audible for the first time. Now a new sonification brings more notes to this black hole sound machine. In this sonification, the colors in the images were mapped to pitches of sound — frequencies of light converted directly to frequencies of sound.
