PRRecent developments in the House of Commons, combined with the upcoming April by-elections, raise a serious concern: the possibility of the Liberal government securing a majority mandate without a general election. While this process may be entirely legal within our system, many Canadians would argue it challenges the spirit of democracy.
A shift like this would hand one party years of largely uncontested power, without a direct mandate from voters. For those in ridings that support parties like the Bloc Québécois or the NDP, it raises an important question: what happens to your voice when your representation is no longer needed to maintain balance in Parliament?
Canada has long operated within a multi-party system that encourages debate, compromise, and accountability. Moving toward a reality where majority governments can be formed without a general election risks weakening those principles and concentrating power in fewer hands.
We are not a republic, we are a constitutional monarchy, with an appointed Senate that seldom opposes the will of the House. These structures place even greater importance on electoral accountability. When that accountability is perceived to be bypassed, trust in the system begins to erode.
This isn’t about party lines, it’s about democratic integrity. Canadians of all political views should be paying attention.
