AUWe’re excited to announce our latest #AudubonTakeover this week featuring the beautiful videography of Nathan Clark (@nathanclarkwildlife)—who earned the Video Honorable Mention in the 2025 Audubon Photography Awards United States and Canada contest!
Nathan is a wildlife photographer and cinematographer with a passion for wildlife and conservation. He hopes that his cinematography inspires a greater appreciation of the amazing beauty, astonishing behaviors in the animal kingdom and a desire to better understand and preserve the natural world.
This week, we’ll be sharing Nathan’s videos of a Great Gray Owl family—the very one in his Video Honorable Mention—that he has been able to watch for four years. He notes that this large owl is a resident of the Boreal Forest and faces challenges with loss of old growth forest habitat and the impacts of climate change.
The mother owl spent about thirty days incubating two eggs. After a month of faithfully sitting, rain or shine on this uncomfortable looking nest snag, two tiny, helpless owlets hatched as seen here. For the next month after that, this mother sheltered and cared for the owlets as they grew into robust little owls. Their successful breeding was Nathan’s top priority—he filmed them using long telephoto lenses, always keeping quiet and avoiding any fast movements.

MIAD Trying to get two little ones down for naps and bedtimes can be a real emotional roller-coaster and no two nights are ever the same. Creating a sleep schedule is a totally different journey for every family, but with the help of @owletcareuk we’re slowly introducing Aurelia to her new nursery during nap times. I’m hoping it helps her feel settled for when the time comes to move her in full time.
We’ve been using the Owlet Smart Sock Plus on Aurelia which is a real game changer. Not only does it track her heart rate, oxygen level AND sleep trends, which will hopefully help get us all into a routine, it also helps with my mummy anxiety by having access to her readings via the Owlet Care app which notifies me if those readings leave the preset zones. Along with @owletcareuk Cam’s in both the girls rooms which will notify me to any movement, I can rest a lot easier knowing I can check in on them without having to creep into their rooms and risk disturbing them.
It’s also keeping us entertained, as Sienna’s notifications tend to be capturing her up to mischief when she should be sleeping! #owlet

AUWhile the mother Great Gray Owl stays at the nest to incubate, and then shelter the young owlets, the father owl is responsible for feeding both mom and the new babies. This mostly nocturnal owl usually hunts all night and then much of the day to provide enough food for the growing family.
The father patiently stalks voles, mice, chipmunks and other rodents and even some birds, using its fantastic hearing to pinpoint its prey. He swoops in on silent wings and grabs the unlucky prey using sharp talons. He then flys back to the nest and delivers the food to the mother who feeds herself and the baby owls, as seen here in @nathanclarkwildlife’s fantastic clip!
Occasionally, if the mother hears a mouse near the nest, she will swoop down from the nest and grab it, then quickly return.
Nathan Clark documented this Great Gray Owl family for four years—and one of his videos earned him an Honorable Mention in this year’s Audubon Photography Awards. This week, we’re sharing more of his clips showing this family’s story.

A little owlet carefully makes his away across a branch on a windy evening in the wetlands. His claws stretch and clasp each step of the way as he leans into the wind. He stops for a moment to gently kiss his toes, grateful for his ability to hang tight to the tree. It was so fun watching this little owlet! Filmed with my Nikon Z9 and 600mm f/4 TC lens, teleconverter engaged at 840mm, DX crop for extra reach, slow motion video.

KAIM JUST A MOM WITH ANXIETY 🥲
We introduced Mayes to peanut butter today & I had him wear his @owletcare sock so I could monitor his oxygen levels incase he started having an allergic reaction and couldn’t breathe 😭 I had food allergies as a baby/kid so I’ve been terrified to introduce allergens BUT we did it & so far so good — don’t worry I’ll keep his owlet on for the new few exposures as well 😝
