DRIf only there is a magic pill for everything, right? 🤭
I have come across a few parents who have asked me whether they could give their child supplements INSTEAD OF sending their child for speech therapy for Speech Delay. Thanks to social media, there are products out there which ‘overclaim’ that by taking the supplements, it can overcome speech delay. In fact, I have also politely declined an invitation to collaborate with a brand that sells supplement that is said to help with speech delay.
So what works then? 🤔🤔
👉Stimulate your child’s speech development at home. Spend time to talk, sing and play with your child. Learn the red flags of speech delay.
‼️ If you have any concerns with your child’s speech/language development, please do get your child’s development assessed by a Paediatrician. We will then assess whether it is truly a speech development issue, are there any delays in other areas of development or whether it could be other developmental issues such as Autism.
⭐️ Once the speech delay has been confirmed, we would usually refer the child to the Audiologist to get his/her hearing assessed and also refer to the Speech Therapist. The Speech Therapist will check your child’s speech and language skills such as what your child understands (Receptive Language), what your child can say (Expressive Language), sound development, clarity of speech and your child’s oral–motor status. Speech Therapy will be commenced to help support his/her language skills and also support at home by the parents will be encouraged.
‼️ Please get help early instead of resorting to taking supplements, as early intervention has always been shown to give a better outcome for the child. 👍👍
