This is Pando, the largest living organism on Earth. Pando is a single quaking aspen tree located in Fishlake National Forest in Utah. Spanning over 106 acres and weighing over 13 million pounds and at least 80,000 years old. This thing is a beast. It’s one organism grown from seed, which has cloned itself over and over without many problems in the past. Sadly, after 80,000 years, Pando is in decline. This is due introduced pest such as bark beetles plus overgrazing by deer and the introduction of cattle. Much of the overgrazing has been caused by man because we eradicated many of the deers natural predators, such as wolves, bears and cougars. There are ways to save Pando, though some are controversial. Some people want to reintroduce predators like wolves, while others want to build fences around Pando. What do you think should be used to safeguard this 80,000 year old creature? Let me know in the comments. #old #oldest #tree #gardening #nature

Imagine walking through a forest, only to realize… it’s actually one big tree.🌳 This is “Pando,” the world's largest living organism located in Utah's Fishlake National Forest. Its identical stems are genetically connected underground, causing it to spread across 106 acres and weigh over 13 million pounds, making it incredibly unique. But how has this tree been able to survive while facing environmental threats? On the newest episode of Untold Earth, see how this ancient tree has survived for thousands of years—and what humans are doing to protect it. For more, head to @pbsterra on YouTube! . . World's Largest Living Organism - Located In Utah. - Fall Colors have just hit the higher mountains and this video, taken just a few days ago, shows Pando which is the name given an Aspen tree in Utah that has 4,700 stems and weighs an estimated 13 million pounds. Researches have performed genetic testing to identify the stems are all from the same origin. What looks like a forest patch of individual trees is actually just one tree that is connected via a complex root system. - Pando is visible from the paved Utah road SR25 that leads into Fish Lake and is close to Loa, Utah where you'll find lodging, dining, and groceries as you visit this area. Leaves are changing all across the Boulder Mountain and Thousand Lakes mountain areas of Capitol Reef Country/. Meet Pando — the largest living organism on Earth. 🌳 Hidden in Fishlake National Forest in Utah, what looks like a normal grove of quaking aspens is actually one single tree connected by a massive underground root system. Over 40,000 stems, all genetically identical, all part of the same organism that has been quietly growing for thousands of years. Pando weighs an estimated 6,000 tons and spreads across more than 100 acres, making it not just the largest tree — but the largest living organism known to science. But here’s the strange part: most people drive right past it without realizing they’re standing inside something extraordinary. This is our introduction to Pando — a forest that’s actually one tree, and one of the most incredible living things on the planet. #Pando #AspenClone #FishlakeNationalForest #NatureFacts #TreeHuggers WildUtah ForestEcology NatureIsAmazing PublicLands OutdoorEducation

Aspen trees are full of fascinating quirks! For starters, they’re one of the few tree species that can clone themselves, meaning what looks like a grove of many trees is often just one massive organism connected by a shared root system. One famous example is “Pando,” a clonal colony of quaking aspens in Utah that’s estimated to be over 80,000 years old. Making it one of the oldest and heaviest living organisms on Earth! Their leaves have flat stems that cause them to tremble or “quake” even in the slightest breeze, giving them their nickname, “quaking aspens.” In autumn, they put on a spectacular show, turning vibrant shades of gold and yellow, especially stunning against evergreen backdrops. Plus, unlike many trees, aspens can photosynthesize through their bark, helping them survive in cold climates even when leafless! . . . #rallyadventures #lifesagardendigit #adventure #discoverearth #goride #explore #rideon #instamoto #motorcycle #aspen #tree #outdoors #scenery

The trembling giant 🍂 A single male quaking aspen named Pando lives on a hill in the Fishlake National Forest, Utah. He is over 10,000 years old, spans over 100 acres, and is the source of over 40,000 stems that appear to us as individual trees in a widespread forest. And up until recently, he was dying. Aspen trees only live up to 100-130 years and are replaced by young stems, but Pando hadn’t been developing enough young stems to fully replace existing older stems as they die. Aspen ecosystems are among the most valuable vegetation types in this region, but according to a report by the Ecological Society of America, quaking aspen is being stressed across the America West from drought, unregulated grazing, fire suppression, development, and past management practices. But there is hope for Pando: large swaths of forest have been fenced off to allow enough young stems to establish a new canopy as the old one dies off, and those areas have shown significant regeneration. What’s more, the difference between areas that were just fenced off versus areas that were also actively treated with burning, shrub removal, and selective overstory cutting was insignificant - meaning that just closing off access to Pando meant that it could regenerate itself just fine without any extra help from humans. To me, this marvelous organism is just another example of our planet’s incredible ability to survive, rebuild, and thrive, when we allow it to do so. #pando #pandotree #aspen #aspentrees #aspengrove #fishlakenationalforest #utah #autumn #fallfoliage #aspensinfall #travelphotography #environmentallyconscious #environmentprotection #forestservice

This is the largest, most dense organism ever found weighing in at nearly 13 million pounds.
It’s called Pando which is latin for “I spread” and It’s an aspen clone grove.
All the trees in the grove are genetically identical and originate from a single parent tree, making the entire grove essentially one massive organism connected through an extensive underground root system.
Estimated to have started at the end of the last ice age, the clone spreads over 106 acres, consisting of over 40,000 individual trees. Some of the sprouts are over 130 years old.
You can find it at Fishlake National Forest in central Utah where you can hear the leaves quake and admire the breathtaking display of golden foliage during the fall season. Worth noting, while Pando is often referred to as the largest organism, there is some debate about this claim, as a massive fungus in Oregon known as Armillaria ostoyae also contends for the title. “Trees are poems the Earth writes upon the sky.” - Kahlil Gibran In the mountains of central Utah, lives one of the largest and oldest organisms on the planet, covering nearly 44 hectares and weighing around 6 million kilograms. Pando is a giant quaking aspen, named for its leaves that shiver in the wind. While Pando is made up over 40,000 different stems, underground they are all connected with a single root system and are all genetically identical, so it is actually a single colonial aspen. Each individual clone stem has a lifespan of about 100 years before being replaced by a young one, making it essentially immortal. Scientists think that Pando is at least 15,000 years old based on glacial evidence, but some estimates put it at 80,000 years or much older. Currently, it is suffering a complex ecological breakdown. Grazing animals such as mule deer and cattle have overpopulated the area and feasted on Pando’s clone saplings, which makes it difficult for it to grow new clone stems. Its colony of stems is aging with not enough young ones to replace them. These grazing animals have multiplied, because humans have driven predators away and flooded the surrounding lands with livestock. Fencing has been built to help mitigate overgrazing but fails to fully address the underlying issue. Will we let this remarkable organism die or protect it for future generations? What happens next will be a reflection of our stewardship of the natural world. 🎥: PBS Newshour Sources: Smithsonian, Wiki, US Forest Service — Please like this post and share to your story to help spread the @poetry.of.science!
