Aragog machine on HackTheBox and a classic 🕷️ XXE (XML External Entity) injection — a real old-school parser abuse move. The /hosts.php endpoint was accepting raw XML input, and when the backend XML parser is misconfigured (usually something like libxml2 in PHP or Java apps), it’ll happily resolve external entities for you. That’s where we slide in the payload 😈: We define a <!DOCTYPE> block and craft a custom entity like <!ENTITY ddrt SYSTEM "/etc/passwd">. This tells the parser, “Yo, every time you see &ddrt;, go grab the contents of /etc/passwd and drop it in.” So when the XML body includes <subnet_mask>&ddrt;</subnet_mask>, it fetches the whole passwd file and returns it in the HTTP response. 📂💥 The beauty (and danger) of this is you’re not limited to just /etc/passwd. You can point the entity to other juicy files (/proc/self/environ, DB creds, SSH keys), or even use protocols like http://, ftp://, or file:// to pull in payloads from a server you control. This opens up SSRF attacks, out-of-band XXE with malicious DTDs, or if you’re lucky, even command execution.
