Melina Handley is the Cardiac Critical Care Operational Lead, APP at Seattle Children’s Hospital, and her journey into pediatric cardiac care started with a moment she’ll never forget: seeing her first beating heart during a nursing student rotation at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton. That experience sparked a lifelong passion for caring for children with complex heart disease and for the teams who make that care possible. Through PCICS, Melina has built lasting connections and helped shape the future of the field. Since joining in 2010, she has co-led the Quality Improvement & Safety Committee, served as co-chair of the APP Special Interest Group, co-authored work on the evolution of APP training in pediatric cardiac ICUs, and now proudly serves on the PCICS Board. 💡 Her advice: Be bold, curious, and kind. Embrace vulnerability, ask questions, and remember that you don’t need a title to make a meaningful impact. Outside of the CICU, Melina loves time at the beach, gardening, nature walks with her dogs, traveling, and exploring new cuisines with friends. ✨ Fun fact: She designs and sews clothing and even made her own wedding dress, as well as many of her kids’ costumes! 📚 Inspired by: Brené Brown’s books and podcasts on courage, vulnerability, and self-compassion 🌍 Bucket-list dream: Take her mom on a European adventure through the UK, France, and Spain 💙 Grateful for: Her two sons and watching them grow into incredible young adults Learn more and join members like Melina today: pcics.org/ #PCICS #MeetAMember #PedsCICU #CardiacCriticalCare #AdvancedPracticeProvider #WomenInMedicine #HeartCare #PediatricCardiology

Dr. Candace Mannarino is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Cardiology, and Critical Care Medicine and an attending physician at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago / Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine. She’s drawn to pediatric cardiac intensive care because of the complex physiology, the teamwork required to move patients forward, and the privilege of walking alongside families through uncertain moments. Through PCICS, Candace has helped lead the Advanced Bootcamp for RNs, APPs, and Fellows since 2022 and serves on the Quality Improvement & Safety Committee, contributing to a community committed to improving outcomes for children with heart disease. 💡 Her advice: Embrace the power of the pause. When uncertainty strikes, the instinct may be to act quickly—but taking a moment to gather the team and clarify the shared plan can lead to better outcomes. Outside the CICU you might find Candace traveling, hiking, spending time with family… or playing the drums! 🥁 📚 Currently inspired by: Astrophysics for People in a Hurry by Neil deGrasse Tyson 🪂 Most adventurous moment: Skydiving in her 20s 💙 Grateful for: Her family and the incredible colleagues she works with every day Don't miss Dr. Mannarino as she co-moderates the PCICS webinar on April 14: Launching Effective Debriefing: Principles, Practice, and Psychological Safety. CPR: What Most People Don’t Realize The American Heart Association recommends that all hospitalized patients have an advance directive and that clinicians have open, honest conversations about prognosis and the realistic chances of survival after CPR. When discussing CPR, physicians can explain that only about 15% — roughly 1 in 6 — of hospitalized patients survive to discharge. For patients with advanced co morbidities (advanced cancer, dementia, multi-organ failure), survival drops even further — and many survivors face lasting neurological or functional impairment. Informed decisions protect dignity, values, and patient-centered care.#Pallipulse #Palliativecare 📚 References Rosoff PM, Schneiderman LJ. I'll let you in on a secret 🤫 there is no secret. Here are 10 things the most successful programs do: 🫀 They train the ENTIRE team, not just the surgeon 🫀 They commit to years, not weeks 🫀 They let local teams lead as early as possible 🫀 They track outcomes obsessively 🫀 They don't just donate equipment, they train people to use and maintain it 🫀 They build relationships with local governments and hospitals 🫀 They start with simpler cases and build complexity over time 🫀 They create a culture of accountability, not blame 🫀 They invest in post operative care as much as surgical skill 🫀 They define success as the day they leave and the program thrives without them Just consistency, commitment, and a belief that every child on earth deserves access to life saving heart surgery regardless of where they were born. 🫀🌍 🔥 Follow us to learn how we're building sustainable pediatric cardiac surgery programs worldwide. 🔗 Link in bio to see how to help. #pediatricheartsurgery #congenitalheartdefect #CHD #globalhealth #capacitybuilding #heartsurgery #savingliveseveryday #sustainablehealthcare #medicalmissions #surgicaleducation

Investing in education to better serve our patients and trainees. 📚🩺 Three of our Critical Care APP Fellowship faculty recently attended the National Conference for Nurse Practitioners in Acute Care (NPAC 2026) in Orlando. Throughout the conference they participated in hands-on procedural workshops, evidence-based lectures, and collaborative learning with colleagues from across the country. Opportunities like this allow our faculty to stay at the forefront of acute and critical care practice, bringing new knowledge, skills, and insights back to Penn State Health to enhance both patient care and the training experience for our fellows. #acutecarenursepractitioner #criticalcare #cme #lifelonglearning

👉 Comment “HEART” below and we’ll send you your Free Impact Report so you can see how your support is helping change lives❤️‍🩹 Medical missions are valuable. They save lives, raise awareness, and bring hope to families who have none. But in complex cases, missions by themselves are never enough. When a hospital has no trained cardiac surgeon, no experienced ICU nurses, no perfusionists who know how to run a heart-lung machine, a two-week visit can only do so much. The children who get operated on survive. But the hundreds more born after the team leaves have nowhere to turn. ❌ If that capacity isn't built, hospitals can receive mission after mission for decades and still depend on foreign teams to save their children. That's not progress. That's dependency. Real progress happens when visiting teams transfer skills, mentor local staff, and stay engaged for years until the program can function independently. 🌍 We don't replace local teams. We build them. Sustainability doesn't come from more visits. It comes from investing in the people who will be there long after we're gone. That's exactly how we approach pediatric cardiac care at the Global Cardiac Alliance. #pediatricheartsurgery #globalhealth #capacitybuilding #globalcardiacalliance #drnovick #medicalmissions #sustainablehealthcare #congenitalheartdefect #childrenshealth #lastingchange #buildingcapacity #heartwarrior #healthcareforall #medicalcharity
