Peggy Lee was a jazz-pop icon whose smoky voice and cool elegance helped redefine American popular music in the mid-20th century. Born Norma Deloris Egstrom in North Dakota in 1920, she rose from small-town radio singer to a sophisticated star with a flair for both performance and songwriting.
She got her big break singing with Benny Goodman’s orchestra in the early 1940s, but it was her solo career that truly set her apart. Known for her sultry phrasing and minimalist style, Lee could make any lyric sound intimate. Her biggest hits—like “Fever,” “Is That All There Is?” and “Why Don’t You Do Right?”—became standards, blending jazz, pop, and blues with a unique sense of drama and restraint.
Beyond her vocal talents, Lee was a pioneering female songwriter and one of the first women in music to fight for creative control and royalties. She also co-wrote and voiced characters in Disney’s Lady and the Tramp—yes, that’s her purring through He’s a Tramp.
With a career that spanned six decades, Peggy Lee left behind a catalog as elegant and uncompromising as she was. A true original—cool, smart, and quietly revolutionary.

Any time I’m alone and down in the dumps or completely underwhelmed by life, I sing this song’s chorus, and it forces me to crack a smile and have a laugh at my own camp-ass expense.
I didn’t learn this until today, but Peggy Lee was the inspiration for Miss Piggy from The Muppets (originally called Miss Piggy Lee). It’s somewhat comical that the beautiful and incredibly talented Peggy Lee started to look like a living Muppet in her later years. The only things that move above the neck in this video are her lips and her eyelids
Back to this song, I love it so much that on my eventual epitaph, I want one of three things written:
“Is that all there is?,”
“Teigan Reamsbottom: he did it the hard way,”
or “This is not Teigan’s final resting place. He was instead cremated and sprinkled over a chicken caesar salad.”

Peggy Lee would have turned 103 today. She was an incredible singer, songwriter and all round entertainer of the twentieth century. She worked hard and overcame hardships and sexism to succeed in the music business and the entertainment industry. Peggy had such a beautiful, tuneful voice and such a gentle, emotive tone. I love watching her performances like this iconic duet with Dean Martin. Two legends performing a medley of songs with perfect pitch, tone and chemistry. I adore them and really admire Peggy's work ethic and I'm grateful we have her songs.
