PEMost people think perfumers choose notes based on vibe - fresh on top, florals in the middle, woods at the base.
But the truth is far more scientific.
It all begins with VOLATILITY - you know, how fast each molecule EVAPORATES.
Top notes use small, lightweight molecules like citrus, mint, or light fruits. They evaporate within minutes, which is why they hit you first.
Heart notes are built from medium-volatility ingredients, like jasmine, rose, spices, and greens. These show up after 10–30 minutes and create the real identity of the fragrance.
And base notes use heavy molecules with low vapour pressure, like woods, musks, vanilla, and amber. These anchor the perfume for hours.
Perfumers study vapour-pressure data, use tools like GC/MS and headspace analysis, and test how every ingredient evaporates on skin and blotters.
Then they build the formula in a pyramid - roughly 30% top, 50% heart, 20% base, and refining it through endless trials until the blend moves smoothly from bright opening to deep dry-down.
