With fewer cues to work with, your brain concludes you must be moving slowly, even if nothing about your actual speed has changed. Cover the center instead, and the opposite happens: peripheral motion stays intact, so movement feels faster. This is driven by optic flow, the full-field pattern of visual motion your brain uses to estimate both speed and direction. It’s the same principle that makes narrow roads feel faster than wide ones, and why tunnels quietly nudge drivers to brake without them ever realizing why.
