“Need Your Love So Bad” was written by Little Willie John in 1955. John Mayall encouraged Green to cover it in 1968. Green didn’t change the song so much as inhabit it. The strings that producer Mike Vernon insisted on adding were there to make it commercial. What Green did inside them needed no help.
B.B. King said of him: “He has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats.” That is not a small thing to say. King had heard everyone.
Green’s core body of work runs from 1966 to 1970. Four years. In that time he replaced Eric Clapton in the Bluesbreakers, founded Fleetwood Mac, wrote “Black Magic Woman,” “Albatross,” “Oh Well,” “Man of the World,” and “The Green Manalishi,” and then walked away from all of it. While touring Europe in March 1970, his drink was spiked with LSD at a commune near Munich. Mick Fleetwood said Peter Green was never the same after that.
He was eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia, spent time in psychiatric hospitals, and underwent electroconvulsive therapy during the mid-1970s.

WOGary Moore performing “Need Your Love So Bad”
The song is sixty years old and has passed through three distinct lives. Little Willie John first recorded it in 1955 as a rhythm and blues ballad, a tightly wound plea for love unlike the usual R&B fare of the era. In 1968, Peter Green brought it to Fleetwood Mac after John Mayall encouraged him to cover it. Green slowed it further, let the strings breathe around it, and turned it into something spectral.
Then it reached Gary Moore.
Moore recorded it in 1995 for Blues for Greeny, a tribute to Peter Green. The album was recorded using the same 1959 Les Paul Standard that Green had played on the original tracks. Green had loaned Moore the guitar years earlier, then sold it to him after leaving Fleetwood Mac. Moore didn’t borrow the instrument. He carried it forward.
Moore was careful not to call it a tribute album. “The guy’s alive,” he said at the time. “It’s more a thank you album… Peter helped me a lot. He helped us get management sorted out and a lot of what has happened to me is through meeting him.”
Moore died on February 6, 2011. He was 58. The Greeny Les Paul is now owned by Metallica’s Kirk Hammett. The guitar has now passed through three hands, each time carrying everything the previous player left in it.

just after the first lockdown in uk i was sitting in my car waiting for sshh to come out of a store when my dear now sadly departed friend Bernie Marsden called. ( bernie was original guitar player in whitesnake and wrote big hit ‘here I go again’ ) I had toured with Bernie and slide guitarist Mickey Moody (also original guitarist in white snake )playing strictly blues on and off from 89-94
Bernie was with Peter at Peter’s house in canvey island , Essex.
They wanted to do a small impromptu gig at bath Pavillion with me and maybe dave bronze or Pino . I never got to speak with Peter but I could hear him in the background going ‘I’d still rather be fishing’ and ‘I might just play harmonica!’ I said to tell him he could bring his harmonicas and a fishing rod if he liked !’
We were set . Peter was up for it and into it ….
Peter Green died the very next day.

RONeed Your Love So Bad has lived several different lives. It started in 1955 when Little Willie John recorded it as a slow, pleading R&B ballad. Then in 1968, Peter Green transformed it with Fleetwood Mac into something far more haunted and emotional. Then it reached Gary Moore. Moore recorded his version in 1995 for Blues for Greeny, a record built around the songs and guitar style of Peter Green. Moore even used Green’s famous 1959 Les Paul Standard, the same guitar Green had played during his Fleetwood Mac years. That guitar alone has become part of rock history. Green loaned it to Moore, later sold it to him, and decades after Moore’s death it would eventually end up with Kirk Hammett. But what makes Moore’s version of “Need Your Love So Bad” so special is not the guitar. It is the way he plays it. Every note feels stretched out, wounded and patient. He does not rush anything. He lets the spaces between the notes do just as much work as the notes themselves.
Moore once said he did not even want to call Blues for Greeny a tribute album because Peter Green was still alive. He called it more of a thank you. That is exactly what this performance feels like.
