Once a bustling economic hub, located in the commune of Terrier Rouge Northeast of Haiti in the Bae of Fort-Liberté, Haiti, offered a beacon of hope and prosperity to thousands of Haitians. Its rich natural resources, diligently exploited, fueled its growth and made it a symbol of progress within the country. But today, Phaëton stands as a stark reminder of what was, a ghost of its former self, swallowed by the tides of time and neglect.
Today, Phaëton stands as a symbol of potential lost. Its story should serve as a call to action, urging us to learn from the past and build a more equitable and sustainable future for all Haitians.

Wayah Bald Fire Tower.
An iconic stop on the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina!
Wayah Bald has a vantage point of 5,342 ft. in elevation in the Nantahala National Forest, near Franklin, North Carolina. On a clear day, you can see north to the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee and south into the rolling hills of Georgia! I loved that I could hop right onto the Appalachian Trail as well, and the views were incredible!
Situated along both the Appalachian Trail and Bartram Trail, the 53-ft., three-story stone lookout on Wayah Bald was decommissioned in the 1940s. It was listed on the National Historic Lookout Register in 2007, and there is no admission charge. Signs on top of the tower educate visitors on the surrounding mountains, and there are bathrooms as well as a small picnic area at the very end of the turnaround.
It’s a beautiful place and very little walking is necessary!

NCIn river systems along the East Coast, the fall line marks the transition between the Coastal Plain and the Piedmont.
In practical terms, it’s where slower, sandy-bottom rivers begin to break over rock, ledge, and shoal habitat.
For American shad, that shift in gradient and substrate creates ideal spawning conditions. Historically, before dams and barriers, shad moved even farther upstream into North Carolina’s interior rivers than they do today.
Understanding the fall line helps explain where and why these fish concentrate each spring.
