An Italian house centipede is the house centipede(Scutigera coleoptrata) itself, a common species with origins in the Mediterranean region, including Italy, that is now found worldwide. This incredible documentary photo was taken just a few days ago in Washington D.C. by photojournalist @tom_brenner. It reminded me of the photo by Robert Frank, Trolley—New Orleans. 1955. They visual similarities are immediately obvious. The framing is the same. We’re taking a side view of windows on public transportation. And both photos show the state of race relations in their era. There are expressive faces and menace and worry all present. 70 years separate these, but to me, my interpretation here, is that we haven’t progressed nearly as much as we should have as a society. Photos like these are important for learning about the world around us and giving us a chance to think more deeply about what’s happening now and what things were like in the past. #photography #photographer #photojournalism #photojournalist #news #documentaryphotography #nytimes #washingtondc

What made me create fictional work with the use of AI? I’ve been a professional photographer for 18 years and I still take the occasional job here and there, but for most of my career I’ve traveled the world and documented people, weddings and events. I’ve documented people on six out of seven continents, but when COVID struck my business was more or less wiped out. On top of that, my last few years of doing business I started falling out of love with the stories I was documenting, I wanted to get into more story based fictional work and the type of work I was hired for allowed less and less freedom of expression. In 2022 I started experimenting with AI, mostly for fun, but I soon realized we were seeing a paradigm shift in image making taking shape in front of our eyes. I started creating characters and worlds, all fictional, focusing immediately on aging and personal expression. Why, I don’t know. I believe the people and stories exist, they’re just waiting for someone to be ready, for someone to tell them out loud. And here we are now. If you enjoy what I do, the easiest way to help me is to interact with my posts, comment and like, then I know you exist.
