AMThe Phrygian cap is a symbol of French liberation. Most people don’t realize that it goes back quite far in history, seen across the World, even in the US.
How far back? Well, many historians trace it to the pileus, a cap worn by the formerly enslaved in Ancient Rome, to indicate that they had been freed.
The main association though is from the French Revolution (1789-1804). It is not a coincidence that Paris pledged to “drive a revolution through sport” with these 2024 games. Which they 💯 did! 💥
One thing less noticed on the mascot is its eyes which represent cockades, the three color badges that inspired the national flag in the 1790s.
While I thought the mascot was a bit random before the games began, I now can’t imagine it being any different! Paris created a feeling of freedom, peace and celebration at these Olympic Games. They gave us hope for a peaceful world. As the IOC President said at the closing ceremony, “We know that the Olympic Games cannot create peace, but the Olympic Games can create a culture of peace that inspires the world. This is why I call on everyone who shares this Olympic spirit: Let us live this culture of peace every single day.” ❤️
