The Camino Francés starts at the border of France and Spain in either Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port on the French side or in Roncesvalles on the Spanish side. Starting in Roncesvalles will save you a day, but starting in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port means you’ll experience the trail’s most mountainous day and begin in France.
The Camino de Santiago actually has many routes, as pilgrims throughout history would make their way from home all the way to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. However, the Camino Francés is the busiest of the Caminos, and it is guaranteed that you will meet many people as you hike and hopefully make some great friends as you go 😊
Throughout your trek, you will stay in albergues, which are hostel-like lodgings that are usually run by religious organizations in the towns along the way. Using your pilgrim credential (like a stamp passport), you will be able to stay in these at a fraction of the cost of normal lodgings. Additionally, some of the albergues even offer community meals! 🤌
This trail is totally recommended for both beginner and experienced hikers for a great community-building time on the trails 💚 You will meet a lot of nice people, and it’s a perfect introduction to thru-hiking & long-distance hiking.
