Did you know that your histogram isn’t totally accurate? The histogram can only read data from the JPEG preview of your image, but the RAW file contains much more data than the JPEG. So why does this matter? If you’re exposing your image as bright as possible without clipping the highlights, you may actually have an extra stop or two of light to use. Even a single stop can result in an image that is just a big sharper in the shadows with less digital noise. Test this out on your own camera and see how many stops you can “overexpose” and still recover the highlights. Next time you’re out shooting a scene with very high dynamic range, it might just yield a slightly higher image quality by taking a slightly brighter exposure.

It’s a no-brainer to make your most-used camera settings the easiest ones to access. While shutter speed and aperture are commonly set on the top two dials of most modern cameras, ISO is usually accessed via a button press. While this might not sound like a big deal, it’s an extra step to access and adjust your ISO, which can oftentimes be the difference between getting the shot and missing it altogether. When you can adjust ISO by moving the control wheel, you can change your camera settings more quickly, and it requires even less thought than if your ISO were set to a button. This may seem minor, but I always recommend doing this when you’re setting up your camera. Give it a try, and let me know what you think!

There really isn’t any reason you wouldn’t be using flexible spot as your focus point for landscape photography... If you’re using any other mode, you’re giving up precision and control over the focus point in the frame, which is crucial regardless of whether you plan to shoot a focus stack or not. Add “Focus Area” to one of the custom buttons on your camera. It’s one of my most frequently accessed settings, so it’s important to have it readily accessible at a moment’s notice.

HSL (Hue, Saturation, and Luminance) sliders control the appearance of each color in your image. The HSL or Point Color adjustment is one of the best ways to adjust color in your photos, as it is much more refined than the global vibrance or saturation adjustments. The Hue slider controls the color’s shade. Think of adjusting greens to look yellow, oranges to look red, or blues to look cyan. These are all hue adjustments and can be used to synchronize colors in your image or to push them further apart to add variety. The Saturation slider controls the intensity of a color. The higher the saturation, the more intense and bold that color will be. The Luminance slider controls a color’s brightness. Decreasing the luminance slider darkens a color, while increasing it makes it brighter. This can oftentimes help a particular color to stand out in the image. All of these sliders should be equally utilized to harmonize the colors in your scene and create the perfect image!

what mode do you like to shoot in and why? I shoot in aperture priority mode 90% of the time because it means I have less settings to worry about than full manual, and the camera’s algorithms for shutter speed and ISO are usually really good at selecting the settings I would use anyway. I’m open to different perspectives though! And I’m sure for those of you that shoot very different subjects or scenarios from me might prefer a different mode.

I’d been considering picking up one of these “ultra-ultra-wide” lenses for a while now, but I didn’t really think I’d find a good use for it... But I was wrong! Since picking up this 12mm lens, I’ve had a ton of fun finding unique compositions and getting super close to the foreground. This video isn’t sponsored; I purchased it with my own money, but I truly think adding a 10mm or 12mm lens to your kit is a great way to capture unique images. It seems like 16mm used to be the standard for “ultra-wide”, but I can definitely see more manufacturers entering the 12mm or 10mm space, and soon it may become essential to have in your kit once enough photographers catch on. If you’ve used a lens this wide before, let me know what you thought about it down below in the comments!
