What can plants teach us about the future of food? 💭 Mel Steer and Dr Martin Lenz from @Sainsbury.Laboratory.Cambridge are showing that plant science is about so much more than pretty petals – from growing research-ready crops like arabidopsis and corn, to developing cutting-edge imaging tools that reveal how plants grow and change over time 🔬 Their work highlights the crucial role of plants in future food sustainability – and the powerful technology helping us understand them better every day 🌱 Get a closer look at the science that helps plants flourish at the Sainsbury Laboratory exhibit at @The_RHS Chelsea Flower Show, running until 24 May 🌸 #CambridgeUniversity #Cambridge #UniversityOfCambridge #PlantScience #RHSChelsea #ChelseaFlowerShow

Plant breathing under a microscope #tree #nature Plants may look still, but under a microscope they are constantly “breathing.” In this close-up view you can actually see the tiny pores on a leaf called Stomata opening and closing in real time. These microscopic gates control the exchange of gases during Photosynthesis — allowing carbon dioxide in while releasing oxygen and water vapor. What looks like a simple leaf is actually a dynamic system working every second to keep the plant alive. Comment “tomato” to get our hand-picked seed varieties perfect for beginner growers 🌱 WHEN TO PICK TOMATOES - We all love the idea of a true “vine-ripened” tomato, slowly turning red under the sun until it’s perfectly ready to pick. But here’s where the plant science gets interesting. There’s a point called the breaker stage, when a tomato hits about 50% of its final color, and at that moment, it’s already received everything it needs from the plant in terms of sugars, nutrients, and overall development. From there, the ripening process is driven internally. Ethylene production kicks in, triggering the chemical changes that develop sweetness, aroma, and that classic tomato flavor. So whether it finishes ripening on the vine or on your kitchen counter, the end result is nearly identical, because the flavor compounds are already set in motion. Harvesting at the breaker stage just means you’re working with the plant instead of against it. You reduce the risk of pests, splitting after heavy rain, or losing fruit right before it peaks. Turns out, the smartest “vine-ripened” tomato might just be the one you bring in a little early 🍅

What looks like magic is actually pure plant science 🌱✨ This man didn’t dig the ground — he brought the ground to the tree. By making a small cut on a living branch and surrounding it with soil inside a transparent container, he triggered a process called air layering. Over time, the branch thinks it’s underground. Moisture + nutrients + patience = roots. After 31 days, the branch grows its own root system. Cut it. Plant it anywhere. A new tree is born. No seeds. No waiting years. Just understanding how nature works. This is how knowledge turns simple ideas into powerful results. Nature always follows rules — when you learn them, you can create life itself. Follow @vincifacts for mind-blowing facts and skills the world rarely explains 🌍🧠🌱

Every season has its own role, even the one where branches stand bare. I have seen people grow uneasy at the sight of fallen leaves, as if change itself is a problem. A little awareness could save many healthy trees. Sometimes the right action is simply to wait and watch. A garden can be more than a beautiful space - it can also be a place to learn. Understanding how plants grow, respond to their environment and work together in a planting scheme is key to creating better gardens. The RHS Level 2 Collection explores plant science, identification and practical horticultural knowledge that can change the way you see plants and gardens. What fascinates you most about plants - their structure, their growth, or how they change through the seasons? 🌿 #gardening #horticulture #plantknowledge #rhs #learningwithexperts
