I just love Pointe Black. It has been a real pleasure to follow this inspiring dance group and capture their journey across many of our major London Borough of Culture events — from Strictly Wandsworth and Urban Flow to Black History 365. The journey culminated last winter when I filmed their beautiful professional production “Overcome” at the Royal Academy of Dance. Ruth Essel’s story is incredibly inspiring, and she is a true role model for her young ballerinas. I especially love the affirmations that begin each session — such a powerful way to build confidence and community. Her passion, love of dance and dedication shine through in the interviews with the young alumni, who all spoke about how much they treasure their classes and how Pointe Black feels like family. How I love grand battements, there's something about letting your leg freely move that feels so good. Although there is so much more to it than just that, there's control, technique, placement, pointed feet and so many more things that you have to think about while you are doing the movement. I wish I could say i have it all down now, but that wouldn't be true.
