I just listed these beauties on my website along with some new products gigisgardengifts.com 10% off Mexican sunflower with code flower10 now through 2/21/26. Mexican sunflower isn’t actually a true sunflower — it’s part of the aster family. What makes it really special is the amount of nectar it produces, which is why you’ll see it absolutely covered in bees, butterflies, and especially monarchs later in the season. Another bonus..the squirrels leave these seeds alone! To grow: Direct sow after last frost once soil is warm, or start indoors 4–6 weeks early. Plant in full sun — the more sun, the more blooms. It prefers average to poor soil (too rich = more leaves, fewer flowers). Water to establish, then it’s fairly drought tolerant. Space about 18–24 inches apart because these get BIG fast. Deadheading helps extend bloom time, but isn’t required. By late summer and early fall, this plant really shines — right when migrating pollinators need fuel the most. New here? Come follow along to learn more about gardening, nature, and our pollinators. #mexicansunflower #Tithonia #PollinatorGarden #PollinatorFriendly #BeeGarden

If you love a garden that’s wild, whimsical, and full of pollinators, these native plants are a must! They thrive with little fuss, return year after year, and bring color, texture, and life to the landscape. Here’s why I’ll never be without them: 🌸 Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) – Hardy in Zones 3-9, this drought-tolerant perennial loves full sun and attracts butterflies and bees. The seed heads also feed birds in winter! 🌼 Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) – A cheerful, heat-loving bloomer for Zones 3-9, thriving in sun to part shade. It reseeds easily, making it a cottage garden staple. ❤️ Hardy Hibiscus (Hibiscus moscheutos) – This showstopper thrives in Zones 5-9, producing dinner plate-sized blooms in late summer. It loves sun and moist soil, perfect for a cottage garden with a wild edge. 💜 Liatris (Liatris spicata) – A tall, spiky bloomer for Zones 3-9, adding vertical interest. It thrives in full sun and attracts pollinators galore, plus it’s deer-resistant! 💛 Coreopsis (Coreopsis spp.) – A low-maintenance, long-blooming native that thrives in Zones 4-9. Loves full sun, tolerates drought, and keeps blooming from summer to fall. Want a low-maintenance, high-impact cottage garden? These native perennial plants will return year after year and never let you down! 🌾🐝💛 Save this post so you remember what to plant this spring and share it with a friend who loves growing flowers. And tell me what native plants would you add to the list? There are so many more but these are a few of my faves! #CottageGarden #NativePlants #PerennialGarden #PollinatorFriendly #GardeningTips #GardenInspiration #WildflowerGarden

What’s a Bee Puddler—And Why Every Garden Needs One 🐝🩵💧 I take urban wildlife gardening seriously here at @theknottygarden I know that bees need more than just flowers—they need water, too. 💧 But here’s the thing: bees can’t land on open water like birds do. They need a safe, shallow place to perch while they sip—and that’s where a bee puddler comes in. ✨ A bee puddler is a small, shallow water source filled with materials like glass marbles, pebbles, or sand. These create landing pads for thirsty pollinators so they can drink without drowning. To make one, I upcycled a thrifted ceramic pot and saucer: Flip the pot as a pedestal and place the saucer on top. Fill it with clean marbles or gravel. Add just enough water to cover the bottom, leaving dry surfaces for bees to land on. Refill regularly to keep it clean and fresh—especially in dry weather! Bees also drink for more than hydration—some species seek out minerals in the water for immune support and colony health. 💛 🌼 Want to support pollinators? Add a bee puddler to your garden this weekend. It’s small, simple, and makes a big impact.

More information on the sleeping bumblebee below!🐝 Female bumblebees return to the hive at night if they can (unless they get caught out late or during bad weather), but males don’t return to a nest so they need a safe, warm place to rest after foraging for food and mates! They seek out flowers for shelter from predators, wind, and rain. How to tell the difference between male and female bumblebees: Female bumblebees bring food to the hive so they have pollen sacks on their hind legs. If you see a full pollen sack on a bee’s hind leg it’s a female! Also, males do not have a stinger. Rethinking the traditional lawn. Swapping out thirsty grass for native and climate-appropriate plants isn’t just beautiful, it’s better for the environment and your water bill. 💧🌼 This San Diego yard now supports pollinators, improves soil health, and uses a fraction of the water a typical lawn would need. Native and low-water groundcovers = sustainable, stunning, and smart. ✅ #SanDiegoGardening #AlternativeLawn #SustainableSanDiego #NativePlantsSD #WaterWiseGarden #SoCalGardeners #PollinatorFriendly #DroughtTolerantLandscape #BackyardTransformationSD #OrganicGardeningSD #Native #nativewest

Good Morning everyone! Happy Wednesday. This morning I have been looking back over the photos and videos of my summer garden, to cheer myself up on another horribly soggy and grey day! Whenever I do this in the dark days of winter, I am always astonished at the colour and abundance of my summer garden…..it’s so easy to forget. The number and variety of pollinators that are drawn in by the nectar rich, open flowers that I grow especially for them is always so uplifting to see too. Looking at the mud flats out there right now, it’s hard to believe my garden will look like this again in 4 months time…..but I think creating and nurturing a garden is a great lesson in patience and pragmatism, and a wonderful reminder to Have Faith! Have a good day lovelies! Em🌸🌿❤️ #beefriendlyflowers #gardeningforwildlife #gardeningforthesoul #colourfulgarden #pollinatorfriendly

Phlox paniculata isn’t often thought of as a native plant, but it is. It is native to the eastern and central U.S. Easy to grow in a sunny spot. Don’t grow it in too much shade because you’ll fight powdery mildew all season long. This stand is a passalong variety. Mine is pink, but they also come in shades of purple and white. Once I tried to grow an orange-flowering variety, but it died after the first year. it’s been my experience that the closer you stay to the native plant the more likely it is to perennialize or return each season. Pollinators also tend to like it best too. Sorry I kept slapping my legs. There were bugs kind of crawling on me and I’m a bit paranoid ever since my lonestar tick adventures. #phloxpaniculata #tallgardenphlox #nativeflowers #nativeplants #perennialplants #grownativeplants #oklahomagardener #easyplants #easytogrow #pinkflowers #instagarden #pollinatorfriendly #pollinatorgarden
