It keeps bothering me that some people like to say "we don't use math when making video games", "engines do all the math for us", "math is not essential to make games".. And yet many aspiring game developers quit because they think it's too heavy on mathematics.. 🤔 (which is a shame)
I mean, just to render a pixel has math behind it. Why are you ignoring it? Rather just embrace it! 😉
Just like I say in this video; using matrices, quaternions, trigonometry, interpolations and random probabilities are a daily occurrence when making video games. Whether you use tools or not, the math is there. And to get the most out of it, a (at least basic) understanding of the math behind it will allow you to bring the best out of it. 🙌
💡 But don't be afraid of math.
When I was in high school I found math very scary and boring. But now I realized I just didn't get it. Once I started to make video games I learned by doing. With making games you can literally see a mathematical failure (like a character being yeeted 1000 yards away 😉). It makes it fun and makes it super satisfying once you get the equation right. It makes you understand and see the beauty of it. At least, it did for me. 🫶
And I don't want to forget to mention that mathematical equations make more sense as well. Instead of having arbitrary names you can use actual references. Making an equation easier to understand. For example xi and xj become 'player.x' and 'target.x'. Making it easier to identify the number used (very basic example).
So, stop being afraid and stop ignoring the use of math in making video games.
