**This is NOT me giving advice! Every author’s budget and set of priorities is different. This is nothing more than my experience — bc this is the type of video I wish I would’ve seen before I published my book**
**With this series, I pursued self-publishing from the beginning. If you’re traditionally publishing, you shouldn’t be paying a dime<3**
📘WRITING SOFTWARE: I use Word because it also doubles as my formatting software for paperbacks & hardcovers. The baseline price is $109 but look out for sales!! I was able to get lifetime access for just $30
📘EDITORS: I personally choose to pay for line/copy edits and proofreading (done by two completely different people, to get more sets of eyes on the manuscript). If I didn’t have such an amazingly talented beta reading team, I would also consider paying for developmental edits.
📘COVER DESIGN: This price can range from around $50 to literal thousands. Look around on IG, on the web, and don’t be hasty. The cover is so important!
📘MAP: *not necessary!* I personally always knew I wanted a map at the front of my book. If this isn’t your cup of tea, no worries. It’s not a necessity :)
📘ISBNs: This also isn’t completely necessary — while your book will need an ISBN, most companies (Amazön KDP, Ingram, etc) will provide you a free ISBN. But to have the number match across publishing platforms, you’ll have to purchase your own from Bowker
📘ATTICUS: This is how I format my ebooks. There are other platforms out there, but I like this one!
(forgot to include) 📘COPYRIGHT: In the US, your work is copyrighted from the second you write it. However… max protection is good. This costs $65ish

JUI get asked this so often so thought I'd answer it here!
There are two main paths to publishing your work. The first is self-publishing, which is when an author publishes their work without a traditional book publisher. This means you're in control of all creative decisions, publishing costs, and royalty profits.
The path I took was the traditional publishing route, which is when a traditional publisher pays you, the author, for the right to publish your work, under certain terms and conditions.
The steps to landing a book deal via a trad pub are:
1. Write and polish your book
2. Research how to write a query letter, synopsis, and how to format your MS (manuscript). You'll need to send these to get a literary agent, because most trad pubs require you to be represented by an agent.
3. Collect a list of agents you'd like to query to (i recommend the sites "manuscript wish list" and "query tracker")
4. Remeber to NEVER pay agents. If they ask you to pay them for their work, that's a red flag. Agents make commission on your sales
5. If an agent is interested, you usually have a chat over the phone & you get to ask all your questions. Then you're given two weeks to notify all other agents of the offer.
6. Once you have an agent, they might put your MS through a few more round of revision, then you go on submission (aka your agent sends your MS out to editors at publishing houses)
7. If an editor loves your work, your book goes to an acquisition meeting. If the publisher decides to acquire you're book, then you get contracted (and paid), and begin working with the editor on preparing your book for publication!
These are the general steps, feel free to share your own journey as a writer, published or not, self pubbed or trad pubbed. Anyone and everyone is welcomed to share their story :)
ALSO: publication is not a race, often it's a long long journey. Dreams don't expire. You can get published when you're in your 20s, 30s,50s,60s and onward.
