THPrimus performing “My Name is Mud” Live on the 30th of October, 1993 at MTV’s Haunted House Party
When Primus released My Name Is Mud as the first single from Pork Soda, they weren’t chasing radio. They were staking a claim in a year where hip-hop, grunge, and metal were colliding and everyone else was busy choosing uniforms. Primus didn’t fit a lane and in 1993, that wasn’t a liability. It was leverage. The result wasn’t minimal. Pork Soda sold a million copies and pushed Primus into the position of playing Lollapalooza, which was a festival built to celebrate the strange. However, to understand how this success took place you first need to understand what’s special about this track. Les Claypool didn’t write about Mud to entertain you. He wrote him to trap you. Mud is a tweeker a meth-soaked, petty, aggrieved who kills a man with a baseball bat over nothing worth remembering. Not ideology. Not passion. Nothing. Claypool said as much. The influence wasn’t fantasy; it came from the movie River’s Edge (1986)
Musically, the song refuses comfort. The bass doesn’t support the track; it dominates it, looping and nagging like a thought you can’t shake. The groove goes nowhere on purpose. The rhythm pins you in place. Claypool’s voice sits too close, narrating self-pity in real time, convincing himself he’s been wronged as the damage stacks up. There’s no arc because there isn’t one. This is how rot works. That’s why My Name Is Mud became a setlist staple. Not because it’s funny because it’s recognizable. You’ve met this guy. You’ve heard this logic. Small grievances, chemical bravado, violence that feels justified because the world felt disrespectful for five minutes.
