There’s a problem with how we grow our food — and it’s more than just a farming issue, says scientist Jonathan Foley. It’s a vast, complex system with major effects on land use, deforestation, methane from livestock, overuse of fertilizers and the carbon-intensive production of animal products. And while emissions from sectors like electricity and transportation are on the decline, food-related emissions are still rising — making this one of the most stubborn parts of the climate puzzle. But there is hope! As executive director of Project Drawdown (@projectdrawdown), Foley shares four data-backed ways that we can help us reimagine how we grow, eat and even waste food. “While the food and climate crisis is an enormous challenge, of course, I also see it as an incredible opportunity,” Foley says. “And that opportunity is to build an entirely better food system.” Visit the link in bio to learn how we can better nourish our world.

More plant-based meals for the win! According to @projectdrawdown, shifting to a diet “rich in plants” is a demand-side climate solution. I mostly see this translated into “You can’t be an environmentalist if you aren’t vegan!” An absolute statement like this requires perfection from beginners and masters alike. I haven’t eaten meat in nearly 30 years, for all the reasons, and I firmly believe this attitude is unhelpful. I am uninterested in judging what others eat or using shame as a tool - it does not work. Project Drawdown also reminds us that “Bringing about dietary change is not simple because eating is profoundly personal and cultural…” There are lots of reasons that folks can’t (or don’t want to) go vegan, and they are all valid. Food apartheid, accessibility, affordability, cultural foods and practices, health conditions, and so on are all reasons why there is no one size fits all. Shaming folks for what they eat as individuals does little to foster systems change. Reducing animal products (where possible, if possible, if you have the capacity) may be more accessible to where you are right now rather than outright elimination. One meal a week? We love to see it! Tried a new vegetable, or grain, or bean, or whole ass vegan recipe? You’re doing amazing, sweetie! You see, I believe that you can’t be an environmentalist if you close your heart and mind. I know we don’t have time to fuck around, but I’m also about meeting people where they are, provided they show up ready to learn and do the work.
