I bought my own copy of Diwan Hafez from the souks the protests started in, and went down the metro station. An old woman who could barely walk was asking me for directions to Inqilab, smiling with the purest eyes i have ever seen and holding his photo. People were chanting “Rahbar” most of them wearing black hijabs, holding flowers and photos of him. Going there with western ideas of Iran in my mind, I never expected to find this kind of love towards him, and today I grieve for them, for the people of Iran who loved him as a person and not as a political figure in the region.
