THI know it’s been said before and not everyone agrees, but I can definitely see the similarities between the current publishing industry and the fast fashion industry (they’re quite blatant to be honest so this is an interesting comparaison).
First of all, the quality of what is currently being published is decreasing. Books are being published too fast only to satisfy customers’ appetite.
A lot of publishers are putting more importance on a writer’s amount of followers on social media rather than the actual quality of their writing/plot construction/etc.
I’m obviously not saying this is all publishers, but I think people often forget that the publishing industry is a business. The main goal for the main actors of the industry (publishers, big retailers, etc) is to make money.
Second of all, the current paper shortage means that less books are being published, and very few new authors make the cut as publishers want to publish what they know will sell. This means that if you’re a new author but your manuscript isn’t GREAT or very marketable, most agents won’t look twice at you. I personally think we’re missing out on incredible writing from incredible authors because the current does not allow for newcomers to enter the game.
(Obviously, some agents and publishers still take a chance on emerging authors. Those tend to be indie/small publishers.)
Lastly, the way readers nowadays consume books is very similar to fast fashion consumption. I have seen people with thousands of books and tbr lists that will take them years to read, people buying half a dozen copies of the same book, and people trying to fit to a book buying ban but incapable of constantly buying the most recent books. I get that collecting books is fun but we can’t ALL be extreme book collectors considering the current state of the planet 😂 I think it’s the reader’s responsibility to care about their own book consumption because big retailers like Amazon or publishers like the Big 5 will only take advantage of it without a second thought for the planet.

Jokes aside, piracy is one of those things that feels harmless until you realise that it threatens the entire publishing industry and harms the author in more ways than you can imagine. It chips away at author sales, royalties, and even future book deals. Books run on numbers and those numbers matter more than we like to admit.
