Walk into a shop in France and say 🇫🇷 Comment ça va ? to someone you’ve never met.
In the US, “How are you?” is basically punctuation. You say it to the cashier, the barista, your taxi driver. No one expects a real answer. It’s just part of the rhythm of hello.
In France, it’s different. The greeting is usually simple and direct: Bonjour or Bonsoir. hat’s it.
Comment ça va ? is something you use once there’s a relationship, even a small one. A neighbor. A regular at your local café. Someone you’ve already said bonjour to a few times.
Start with Bonjour. Always. Then build from there.
