Let's talk about the techniques I'm using for this piece, a couple of which I didn't realized I could do until a few days ago: 1. Using a rotary tool to create texture & negative space If you've been here for a while, you'll know I love to use my rotary tool to create toadstools & whiskers! I used it here too to add texture in the starfish (fun tip, it's also great for fixing small areas). Start by applying the dremel to areas you want to remain "white", then follow with a spoon shader or other flat sided tip to gradually shade the remaining raised areas. 2. Using water to mask areas while torching In some parts that I wanted to torch, there are borders or elements overlapping that I didn't want to torch over. Using a clean paint brush, apply water to the parts you want to remain unburned. You'll need to do this quickly or in parts, as soon as the heat of the torch hits, the water dries up fast! I recommend not adding detail or texture to the light areas until you do this, as the water + heat can fade your design. If you accidentally burn an area you didn't want to, remove it with some sandpaper or lightly apply your dremel 3. Using sandpaper to buff out darkened areas + reveal the wood grain I discovered I could do this while trying to completely remove the torched area, as I wasn't sure I was entirely happy with it. Mid way through sanding with a small piece of sandpaper, I saw the grain start to pop while the rest remained dark, which added so much depth to the piece. Make sure you're only lightly buffing and carefully wipe away excess ash. This might only be successful with certain species that have a distinctive grain, such as this Birds Eye maple. I haven't tried it on other species yet, so let me know if you do! If you have any questions about any of these techniques or others, let me know in the comments 🫶🏼 This is part two of my limited series, When the Tide Rolls Out. Even after practicing pyrography for about 13 years, I am still experimenting with new ways to burn marks into wood, pushing shapes into the background and creating depth in my pieces. I love the soft out of focus blow torch effect against the sharp pyrography. I’ve then been sanding back these blow torched tree silhouettes even further to create ghostly trees in the background. This piece will have washes of colour and of course golds and coppers shining through. To be completed very soon! #pyrography #pyrographyart #woodburning #pyrographyartist #natureart #fineart #artinprogress #woodart #creativeworkspace #sycamore
