Python teeth are a masterpiece of natural engineering. Unlike human teeth, they’re sharp, curved backward, and constantly replaced. A single python can have 60 to 100 teeth on each side of its jaw — not for chewing, but for gripping prey and never letting go. Once prey is caught, those backward curves make escape nearly impossible while the snake slowly swallows it whole. Even damaged teeth aren’t a problem — new ones keep growing throughout the python’s life. One glance inside their mouth reveals millions of years of evolution working flawlessly. Powerful, precise… and a little terrifying. #python #snake #animals #generalknowledge #reels No copyright infringement intended. For education and Entertainment only. Please DM for credit/removal

Firstly, yes that is (or was) a rat 🐭. I buy them frozen in large packs which I then leave on the counter for a few hours to thaw before feeding to my snakes. The rodents don’t come back to life. Snakes have to eat, and this is the food that is nutritious for them. I don’t participate in live feedings unless it’s absolutely necessary. Now that we’ve got that out of the way… So THAT fleshy thing that opens and closes is a snakes glottis - a fascinating and vital part of its anatomy, located at the back of its tongue. It acts as the opening to the trachea (the snakes windpipe), allowing the snake to breathe. Unlike humans, whose glottis remains in a fixed position, a snake’s glottis is highly mobile and can extend outward, especially when the snake is consuming large prey. The glottis ensures that the snake can continue breathing even when its mouth is entirely occupied with swallowing food. Additionally, the glottis is equipped with a small, valve-like structure that can produce a hissing sound by forcing air through it, serving as a defense mechanism. 👅 🫁

The post shares a video of a Central African rock python in Rwanda striking and constricting a yellow plastic bottle, mistaking its movement for prey due to the snake's heat and motion-sensitive ambush instincts. Pythons' backward-curving teeth, evolved for gripping live animals, make releasing rigid objects difficult, as evidenced by the snake's persistent hold even after water dousing fails to dislodge it. With 2.3 million views and 100 replies mixing shock, humour, and local Kinyarwanda quips, the clip highlights human-snake encounters amplified by environmental litter in tropical regions.

How do pythons hunt ? They are ambush hunters that can locate warm-blooded animals by using heat-sensing “pits” or holes along their jaw. They wait until the animal comes close, then a python grabs the prey with its sharp, backward-curving teeth, wraps coils of its body around the prey, and squeezes tight. Pythons are non-venomous. They are constrictors, meaning they coil their muscular bodies around prey, grasping it with their sharp, backward-curving teeth, and squeezing. How They Kill: Constriction was once thought to cause death by suffocation. However, modern research suggests the primary cause of death is cardiac arrest (heart failure) due to the restriction of blood flow. The massive pressure quickly overwhelms the circulatory system. The Big Swallow: Pythons swallow their prey whole. Their lower jawbones are not fused (connected by ligaments instead), allowing them to dislocate and open their mouths incredibly wide—up to six times larger than a similarly-sized snake—to consume very large meals like deer, pigs, or even crocodiles. Heat-Vision: Most pythons are ambush predators. They have heat-sensing pits (labial pits) along their lips that contain receptors sensitive to infrared radiation, allowing them to locate warm-blooded prey in total darkness. Primitive Features: Pythons are considered "primitive" snakes because they possess two functional lungs (most snakes only have one). Vestigial Limbs: They have tiny, visible structures near their vent called pelvic spurs (vestigial hind limbs), which males use during courtship. Parental Care: Female pythons are oviparous (egg-laying). Uniquely among snakes, they exhibit a high degree of parental care, often coiling tightly around their clutch of eggs throughout the incubation period.
