JEi’ve read thousands of queries. genuinely good ones. from writers who can construct a sentence better than most people i know. and they still got rejected.
here’s what i noticed: the writing is never the problem. the packaging is.
querying is essentially a cold pitch to a stranger who has 47 other things open in their inbox. and no one teaches writers how to do that. they teach you to write beautifully (which you’ve done) but no one teaches you how to make it easy for the right person to say yes.
that’s a completely different skill. and it’s learnable.
the query letter, the comp titles, the hook, the positioning … none of that is your artistry. that’s your strategy. and the publishing industry hasn’t made it easy for writers to figure that bit out.
i’m not here for that.

PEI hope the number one thing you take away from this is not just that rejection is normal, but that rejection will teach you so much on your journey. I would not have known how to write, pitch, query, market, or anything for A LABOR OF LOVE POTION if I had not experienced the rejection I did with the first book I ever tried to query.

BAWhat 5 agents say about how to actually write a good query letter! They also mentioned with the emergence of Al, they used to get 700 query letters a year and now they get 2000 so they are trying their best to read everything
I went to the “Ask and Agent Anything” panel at AWP in Baltimore last week, and they did an amazing job trying to demystify what it’s like to be a literary agent reading query letters. They also got real about why you should want an agent and how book advances actually work. Hope this helped! I myself am an aspiring novelist and I thought I would share querying tips to anyone who also finds this helpful. I’m not an expert so if you know more about querying, feel free to share!
