You won’t believe this real historical tactic used by furious farmers in the 1800s‑early 1900s!
When railroads first expanded, they often seized farmland (via “eminent domain”) for tracks — paying farmers a pittance. Trains blasted whistles 24/7, scared livestock & ruined pastures… farmers felt ROBBED.
So they fought back… with a bag of salt.
🐄 THE SALT TRICK:
1️⃣ Cows CRAVE salt — they’ll lick anything salty.
2️⃣ Farmers secretly scattered salt on the rails.
3️⃣ Cows flocked to the tracks, licking the metal…
4️⃣ TRAIN HITS THE COWS! 😱
5️⃣ Farmers filed a “lost livestock” claim → the RAILWAY HAD TO PAY THEM 💰
One dead cow = 50–\200 back then (a FORTUNE!). Some farmers did this again… and again.

In the late 1800s, companies like Joseph T. Ryerson & Son of Chicago used cutaway salesman samples like this to sell massive industrial steam boilers to railroad yards and repair shops.
While locomotives carried their own boilers, the railroads themselves ran on stationary steam systems, powering roundhouses, machine shops, cranes, compressors, and heating.
This is the infrastructure behind the locomotive.
