To celebrate 70 years of Kermit, this week I’ll be posting a clip of Kermit from every decade! Today we’re jumping right to the end of the 70’s with Rainbow Connection from The Muppet Movie in 1979! The song was written by Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher. When writing the song they were heavily inspired by When You Wish Upon a Star from Pinocchio and wanted a song that would set the mood for the whole movie. This is such an iconic moment from the movie and this song has become an American standard and been performed by dozens if not hundreds of artists. The fact that a song sung by a frog in a swamp has gone on to mean so much to so many people is really a testament to the magic of The Muppets🌈🐸🪕

RUFollowing Blondie's success of 𝘈𝘶𝘵𝘰𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘯 in 1980—"The Tide Is High" hit number one in several countries, including the US and the UK; "Rapture" became the first rap song ever to reach number one on the singles chart in the US—they chose not to embark on a supporting tour. This decision was a direct result of severe physical exhaustion and growing internal tensions within the band. The grueling worldwide tour for their previous album had left them, particularly Debbie Harry, creatively and mentally drained.
Blondie's focus changed drastically away from the road and towards low-key activities. This period of artistic experimentation was characterised by Debbie Harry's iconic TV performance of "Rainbow Connection" on The Muppet Show in 1981.
The episode is consistently praised for its unique blend of punk rock and wholesome Muppet humour. A reviewer from the blog ToughPigs called it "one of the best episodes in the whole series," noting that "it's surprising how good these two flavours of entertainment taste when intermixed."
Her performance is frequently described as "down-to-earth" and "sweet." One music critic noted that her performance showcased her "skilled and technically brilliant vocal skills," which challenged the stereotype that punk music was "all noise."
The episode is celebrated for its daring nature, as it introduced the "complicated world of punk counterculture" to a family audience. One commentator noted that "it's an admirable move that The Muppet Show was daring enough to have Debbie Harry on as a guest. The results were more than worth it and probably planted the seeds for some young punks watching."

Unfortunately it would lose to Norma Rae, for the song It Goes Like It Goes

MYWow, what a gift! Here's a clip of my blessing of an interview with the big-hearted songwriter and champion of wonder Paul Williams.
We spoke because I sang his song "Rainbow Connection" to satisfy an item on my dad's bucket list—one I wrote about in my book My Father's List, now being celebrated in the One City, One Book festival in Greensboro, NC. THGraduates at the University of Maryland may have just found their rainbow connection in the wise words of Kermit the Frog’s speech at their commencement ceremony on Thursday.
Kermit was introduced as a star of “stage, screen and swamp” and a seven-time best-selling author to an audience of thousands of graduates and their families. Dressed in a tiny cap and gown, the famous amphibian encouraged new graduates to find their people, take the lead, and make connections.
