ALRediscovering this show is one of the best things to happen to me this year so far. 🫠🥲 While I loved the Emergency! as a whole, I definitely was tuning in for Randy Mantooth exclusively. 🫡🗣️
In honor of EMS appreciation week wrapping up today, I thought I’d try to explain why this show is so important to me and the emergency medicine industry.
This show has continued to stand the test of time and has held up shockingly well and is one of the main reasons we even have paramedic/EMS units in every fire station and city in America. A cool bit of history here is that the first paramedics hailed from Pittsburgh in 1967 and were Black men who worked to address the lack of pre-hospital care in underserved communities. In 1969, a hospital in LA established the very first paramedic program in California, coinciding with the launch of the first LA County fire rescue squad. Before the show aired, only 12 certified paramedics were in LA County, and it was not until 1974, after the passing of the Wedworth-Townsend Paramedic Act, that more paramedics could be certified and operate independently.
I have a bunch of other cool facts on the passing of this bill, but I’ll save that for another day bc I can get long-winded. Emergency! as a show helped educate the public on what a paramedic was, what they did, and established trust in the new phenomenon. As the show continued to air, more and more people across the country wanted the program in their cities, and thus… well, it is why, when you have a medical emergency, you can call 911 today and have a higher rate of survival than ever before.
I have also met many EMTs/Paramedics who said this show was why they wanted to be in this profession, and it has inspired so many and saved countless lives via the public education work written into the script.
EMTs/Paramedics are criminally underpaid for the work they do, and I'm so thankful to them. 🩵
ANWAY! Long story short, I love this show and I will d!e on this hill.

LYIn our final distance event from Salem, six Hornets competed in the men’s 800m!
Our men’s squad placed 5 in the top 10 with Jamison Mantooth leading the way in 1:58.85.
Great execution in the middle pack brought Robert Cummings, Randy White, and Danny Miller through the line just over 2:00.
Nick Brent (2:03.69) and Chase Maters (2:05.23) capped off the smooth early-season display from Finn Pincus.
