During World War II, this bowl shows one week of sugar for one person in the United States. Each individual had their own ration book, including children. Families combined their rations to cook, and once the stamps were used, no more sugar could be purchased that week. This allowance was not just for baking. It was for coffee, desserts, preserving food, and everyday cooking. What makes this especially difficult to imagine today is how limited options were. There were no quick store runs, no drive through coffee, and very few substitutes. If a family ran out of sugar, they waited until the next ration period.
