THIn the Vatican’s March 2026 report on women’s leadership in the church, Pope Francis is quoted directly:
“The organization of societies worldwide is still far from reflecting clearly that women possess the same dignity and identical rights as men. We say one thing with words, but our decisions and reality tell another story.”
That’s the Pope. Naming the gap between stated theology and lived practice.
He’s not a progressive activist, which is what makes this even more stunning a declaration.
It’s not just a Catholic problem. It’s a church problem — across traditions, denominations, and decades.
The question worth sitting with: What does your church say about women? And what do your actual decisions, structures, and practices say?
Those two things may not be the same.
What you believe about women matters — but what you do with that belief matters too.

FASome church stories are really about the soul of the Church.
When a cardinal says the Church may not survive in the long run without ordaining women, the deeper question is not only institutional, it is spiritual. What happens when people love the Church, serve the Church, and still hear that their call could not possibly be real?

AMIn March 2026, the Vatican’s doctrine office released its final report on women’s participation in the life and leadership of the Catholic Church. The report brings to a close the two-year work of Study Group 5, which, as part of the Synod on Synodality, was tasked with studying women’s ministries and leadership. In a special roundtable conversation, editors at America magazine discuss the report’s content and proposals, and ask if the document changes the status quo for women in the Catholic Church.

SIAfter the Vatican in late 2023 gave no definitive answer on whether women could be ordained deacons, Jayne Prior stopped going to Mass in a Catholic Church.
“I’m not going to continue to support an organization that isn’t treating women appropriately,” Prior told Global Sisters Report. “I was just like, there’s no hope this is going to happen in my lifetime and I was done. There is no reason on earth for women to not be deacons … so, yeah, that was the straw that broke the camel’s back, I think.”
Prior, a lifelong Catholic, joined the Episcopal Church the following year, even though she said “the Catholic Church is so much a part of who I am.” She’s still involved with the Ignatian Spirituality Center of Kansas City, and treasures her kinship with Maryknoll missionary circles. But when it came to the lack of action on women deacons after the Vatican’s 2021-2024 synod consultation process, “it was like a flip just switched,” she said.
Her reaction sounded much like the responses Jane Cavanaugh synthesized March 8, International Women’s Day, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Washington, D.C.

When I discovered the real heart of the Church, I realized something. The world rarely talks about it because it understands so little of it. The Church doesn’t erase femininity she elevates it.
From the Blessed Mother to countless female saints, the Church has always seen the dignity, strength, and beauty of the feminine soul. St Pope John Paul II coined it as “The Feminine Genius”. He wrote:
“In God’s eternal plan, woman is the one in whom the order of love in the created world of persons takes first root.”
The highest human person in all of creation is not a king, theologian, or apostle. It is a woman, the Blessed Virgin Mary. Discovering that changed how I saw myself as a woman.
