CONeka Kayda is the world’s first cloned Red ‘Ghost’ Wolf, offering new hope for restoring genetic diversity to the endangered Red Wolf population.
The Red Wolf is the most endangered wolf on Earth. Though supported by a dedicated captive breeding program, the population suffers from a severe genetic bottleneck. That changed when our partners at the Gulf Coast Canine Project identified the Red ‘Ghost’ Wolves of the Gulf Coast—animals once thought to be coyotes, now known to carry ancestral Red Wolf DNA.
This hidden genetic diversity presents a powerful opportunity for rescue. Using tools developed during the dire wolf project, including our novel blood cloning technique, we have cloned the world’s first Red ‘Ghost’ Wolf, a carrier of this coveted DNA. Breeding these new wolves with the existing Red Wolf population could help eliminate the genetic bottleneck.
Neka Kayda exists because of de-extinction science. She’s living proof that the tools developed to bring species back can also help save those on the brink.
