Did you know that April is Autism Acceptance Month? Autism, also discussed as Autism Spectrum Disorder or Autism Spectrum Condition, can impact how individuals feel, think, perceive, communicate, engage, and learn. “Autistic” is not an insult - it just describes a specific way some brains work. Autistic people are not “superhuman geniuses,” “emotionless robots,” or “burdens.”
Many Autistic people are also impacted by other systems of oppression. Autistic women and girls are often underrepresented in research and underdiagnosed, and Black and Brown autistic people are often subjected to additional violence due to systemic racism and ableism.
Remember to that Autistic self advocacy exists and is so important. Listen to Autistic voices (and also non-speech communication) instead of organizations and so-called allies that speak over Autistic people.

April is #AutismAcceptanceMonth a necessary shift from #AutismAwarenessMonth. Why? Because it’s time to ACCEPT Autistic people as they are. Neurotypical people are already accommodated in society, it’s time for Neurodiversity to be embraced too.
Instead of supporting an organization that has the widespread scorn of autistic adults or focusing on the relatives and caretakers let’s support actually autistic people whether them self describe as “Autistic,” “Auties,” “people with Autism,” etc. Many thanks to @transteachertales for all the lessons you’ve taught me!

I thought this was a great representation of how parents often find out about their own neurodivergence (not just autism but also ADHD, PDA, etc.) after their children have been diagnosed.

And sometimes the children are adults at the time of their diagnosis, and it’s these late diagnosed adults who are looking at their parents and finally understanding the parenting they have received in light of one or both parents being undiagnosed autistic and struggling with their own challenges and needs, undiagnosed and unsupported, for years.

One diagnosis can create a « ripple effect » through t a family.
.
Often, though, there is a resistance to acknowledge or even allow the thought of neurodivergence in parents of late diagnosed autistic adults, and in parents whose children have been diagnosed.

And I'd like to also add: Unmasking is complicated and challenging, especially for us late diagnosed Autistics. I personally have had a hard time finding my authentic unmasked autistic self. As well as LETTING myself be unmasked. All that internalized ableism towards myself. I honestly don't know if I ever will know my unmasked self! It is a very complicated and vulnerable process and state of being. And to fully unmask is a privilege a lot of Autistics unfortunately can't afford in their lives, and some are not safe to do so. Especially marginalized Autistics. I hope that if you fall into this category that you are taking care of yourselves as best you can in your current environments! And that you have some time and a safe space to let that mask fall. 💚

Text reads “Will I even know what’s wrong with me?” A new and more recent video of Kai plays, where he sits in his wheelchair, petting an orange cat on his lap. The text changes to the word “no” answering little Kai’s question. The text changes again and explains that there was nothing wrong with little Kai, they’re autistic, and while it can be hard, it gets better because they have better supports now, and are learning to embrace their disability.
