The truth is, I used to be my own worst enemy. I spent years in a high-stress loop, ignoring the “alarm bells” my body was sending. I thought I just had a “weak stomach,” but what I actually had was a nervous system that was stuck in overdrive. When you’re constantly in “fight or flight,” your body de-prioritizes digestion. Your gastric emptying slows down, your diaphragm tenses up, and that internal pressure pushes acid exactly where it shouldn’t be. I wasn’t just dealing with “stomach acid”—I was dealing with a total barrier failure. But here is the shift: healing didn’t come from a more restrictive diet or more “don’t eat” lists. It came from Barrier Optimization. I stopped fighting my body and started supporting the mechanics of my LES (lower esophageal sphincter). Here is exactly how I shifted from erosion to remission: 1️⃣ The “LES Lock”: I started practicing diaphragmatic breathing for 5-10 minutes, especially an hour after meals. This strengthens the crural diaphragm—your “extrinsic sphincter”—to physically prevent backflow. 2️⃣ Nervous System Snacks: I stopped scrolling while eating and started taking 1-5 minute “regulation breaks” throughout the day. Stress impacts your digestive juice production; chewing until your food is “applesauce consistency” reduces the mechanical load on your stomach. 3️⃣ The 4-Hour Buffer: I made it a non-negotiable to stop eating 3 hours before lying down. This ensures gastric emptying is complete, so there’s no pressure forcing that valve open while I sleep. 4️⃣ Left-Side Gravity: I started sleeping on my left side with a slight elevation. This keeps the LES in an “air pocket” above your stomach contents—using physics to keep the acid down. If you’ve been told your “normal” tests mean nothing is wrong, but you’re still hurting, I see you. You aren’t “broken,” your barrier just needs better support. Reflux isn’t always just reflux. For many people, it’s the result of deeper imbalances happening further down the digestive tract. Things like gut infections, low stomach acid, and one of the most commonly overlooked contributors 👉 slow gut motility and constipation. Think of your digestive system like a road. If traffic backs up at the end of the road (constipation), that congestion doesn’t stay isolated - it gradually works its way backward, creating pressure and slowing everything upstream. When that happens, we often feel it higher up as: ✨reflux ✨chest pressure ✨early fullness ✨nausea ✨loss of appetite This is exactly what was happening with my client, Rose. She came to me because of heartburn, reflux, and a heavy pressure in her chest that made eating uncomfortable. But when we looked at her entire digestive picture, it became clear that the primary issue wasn’t just reflux - it was sluggish gut motility and infrequent bowel movements. The miracle reflux cure doesn’t exist. I used to think that I just needed to find the right medication or remedy like infacol or gripe water. Weeks spent and money on ‘the’ solutions to my baby’s reflux. But I never did find it. What I’ve learnt is that there is not a medication or remedy that ‘gets rid’ of reflux. Yes they have their place in managing symptoms like hoarseness or sleep disturbances if needed, and wanted of course. For me I realised that reflux runs way deeper than that. It’s the body telling us about a deeper issue. Yes they helped manage the symptoms of the deeper issue but they did nothing to resolve it. For me as a mum it’s about having the understanding and knowledge that healing that deeper issue is a process. Not an off the shelf remedy or medication. And it’s not a straightforward one either. But my goodness is it worth it. When my baby slept for the first time lying down, comfortably and when a client’s baby jumps 7 growth centiles in a week because baby can now feed efficiently. I want to share this in case you’ve booked yet another Drs appt in the hope you’ll walk away with answers and a plan, rather than medication and thickeners. Most people think reflux = heartburn. But LPR (aka “silent reflux”) doesn’t always burn… it shows up in ways most people and honestly, most providers miss. For me (and so many of my clients), it looked like: • Constant throat clearing • Feeling like something was stuck in my throat • Hoarseness or voice fatigue • A dry cough that wouldn’t go away • “Post-nasal drip” that never improved No burning. No obvious reflux. So it got brushed off… while the root issue kept getting worse. Here’s the truth: LPR is still reflux, it’s just reaching higher into the throat and airways. And popping antacids or PPIs doesn’t address why it’s happening in the first place. In my practice, we look at: • Stomach acid levels (not just “too much” 👀) • Digestive function + motility • Gut imbalances contributing to pressure + reflux • Nervous system regulation (yes, this matters more than you think) •Histamine Because when you actually address the root cause… those “random” symptoms finally start to make sense and improve.
