A lot of people think the reformer was invented to make Pilates harder. But originally, it was actually designed to make Pilates more accessible. Joseph Pilates developed the reformer using springs attached to a bed frame while working with injured and unwell patients. Many of them couldn’t get down onto the floor to perform traditional mat exercises. The springs allowed movements to be supported or assisted, helping people build strength and mobility while lying down. That’s why the reformer is so effective for: • injury rehabilitation • beginners • people with limited mobility The springs can make exercises easier or harder, depending on how they’re used. So while reformer Pilates can definitely be challenging… its original purpose was actually to help people move when mat Pilates wasn’t possible.
