ME04-08-2023 | The End of Chapter 3...
Last Friday, I was discharged from Spinal Rehab in Llandough and repatriated to St Woolos Hospital. Repatriation petrified me as I saw it as going backwards, but in actual fact, it's a step I must take to being closer to going home. As I don't have housing sorted just yet, I've had to come here whilst I wait for it.
Leaving Llandough is scary as it's me leaving a safe bubble where I've spent the last 9 months getting myself to a stage where I can confidently live an independent life again. Do I think I'm ready to have left...no...do I think I will ever feel ready no....am I ready to be back in my home town of Newport and closer to friends and family HELL YES!
It would have felt better leaving knowing I was going home to a fresh new 5 we are still waiting on accessible social housing. So, in the meantime, I will be living in St Woolos Hospital and getting on with my life outside of the hospital best I can.
I would like to thank all the lovely staff, healthcare workers, physios, OTs, especially my OT Amy, nutritionalist, independent living advisors , charity representatives, therapy dogs, housekeepers, and even the caterers for making my time in rehab, one to remember. I have made friends for life there who are in a similar boat to me and those bonds will never be broken as we've been through so much together. I won't go into naming names as I'll forget someone and cause upset but I have to give a special mention to my Rehab Bestie @p_victoria_t , you my girl are truly a beautiful human inside and out and I will miss you so much. I was so glad to have you join me in Llandough as it was nice to have some female company near enough my age, and it has been strange how similar we are! Keep smashing rehab and we will be in touch everyday 🩷 love you byeee ( Sholom Jackie)
I hope your all well and keep your eyes peeled for more progress posts now as I've got tons of content that I purposely held back as i knew I'd be bored or have more time on my hands once repatriated. So here we are...

RE🇫🇷 France brings home the last of its gold from the U.S. and now keeps all reserves in Paris.
France's central bank has repatriated the last portion of its gold that was stored in the United States, ending decades of holding part of its reserves at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
The operation involved about 129 tons of gold — roughly 5% of France's total reserves. Instead of physically transporting the old bars, the Bank of France sold them in the U.S. and purchased new gold bars in Europe that meet modern international standards, which are now stored in Paris.
Due to rising gold prices, the move generated around €12.8–13 billion ($15 billion) in profit for the central bank while keeping the country's total gold reserves unchanged at about 2,437 tons.
Officials said the decision was not political, but part of a long-term strategy to modernize France's gold holdings and maintain direct control over its reserves.

The Thiaroye Massacre was a massacre of French West African soldiers, committed by the French Army on the morning of 1 December 1944 near Dakar, French Senegal. Those killed were members of the Tirailleurs Sénégalais, and were veterans of the 1940 Battle of France who had been recently liberated from prison camps in Europe. After being repatriated to West Africa, they mutinied against poor conditions and unpaid wages at the Thiaroye military camp. DEThree Americans who were sentenced to death by a military tribunal in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for their involvement in a failed coup attempt against President Félix Tshisekedi’s government are now back in U.S. custody and will serve their sentences in the United States.
The three men, identified as 21-year-old Marcel Malanga, his friend Tyler Thompson Jr., also 21, and 36-year-old Benjamin Reuben Zalman-Polun, were part of a foiled plot to overthrow the Congolese government and seize the presidential palace in Kinshasa in May 2024.
The coup attempt, led by Marcel Malanga’s father, opposition figure Christian Malanga, ended in failure. Christian Malanga livestreamed from the palace during the attempt but was later killed by Congolese authorities while resisting arrest.
Marcel Malanga has stated that his father coerced him into participating in the plot. Tyler Thompson Jr., who traveled to the DRC from Utah under the impression that he was going on a vacation, was also involved, while Benjamin Reuben Zalman-Polun reportedly had ties to Christian Malanga through a gold mining business.
In a statement, U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce condemned the May 19th armed attacks that led to the coup attempt and reiterated support for the DRC authorities in holding those responsible accountable.
However, she also emphasized the U.S. government’s commitment to ensuring that the three U.S. citizens are treated with compassion and fairness, with a fair legal process during their repatriation.
The repatriation of the three Americans follows diplomatic negotiations between the U.S. and Congolese authorities, particularly as the DRC seeks to strike a minerals deal with the U.S. in exchange for security support in its ongoing battle against armed rebels in the country’s eastern regions. Since January, the Congolese military has been struggling to repel the M23 rebel group, which is backed by Rwanda and has made significant territorial gains in North and South Kivu provinces.
